Yes, the cops could look at your pm's.

Yes, it might require a warrant but then again kim could hand them over w/ out a warrant if she felt like it.

No, mods can't read others' pm's (to my knowledge). Although I don't think kim would ever exploit users' privacy in such a manner, it's possible we could be hacked or the database could be subpoena'd.
Keep in mind this is a private, nonpaid service, and just assume that anything you write in a pm could become public knowledge.

No, your IP is not private. Every site you visit will know your IP, although theoretically other users (on nwtekno, for instance) shouldn't be able to see it. However, mods here on nwtekno can view users' ip's for security purposes.
However, having your IP known is a terrible thing as long as you have a secure system.

passwords either. neither can mods.

so i don't think cops could look at them because as far as i know there isn't any way to access them.

that said, i'd appreciate it if you don't carry on long and/or private conversations using them. as i'm sure you know,
nwtekno crashes periodically 'cause of server load.
there is free email which is linked at the top of the page
and runs off a different server.. and of course there's
yahoo, hotmail, etc..

You should never ever conduct anything really private or illegal over the internet, because NWTekno *has* been served with a subpoena before (they would only give us a warrant if a subpoena didn't work, and in this case only public info and IPs were handed over), and if it were to happen again, I doubt we'd say no.

The only thing that's super secret on here is your password. That's why if you forget it you can only reset it, not recover it.

Someone who had done something illegal had bragged about it in the forums, and was being prosecuted for it, so they wanted those posts. The IPs were to verify that the posts were being made from a dorm computer, which verified the posters identity.

So if you're posting from your dorm, be extra careful you're behaving, because anything can be tied right back to where you live.
