I had a good time. It was super hot in there, but that was to be expected. Sapphire, Rob Noble, Aaron S., Dowlz, pretty much everybody I heard dropped some good tunes. I had to leave right after Flave started spinning cuz my paid parking pass expired at 4 am, lame...Simply Jeff was really good. John B was freakin sick! He played some electro tracks in the middle of his set that were kinda boring, but other than that...wow! Nice party Grooveside!

i had a very good time at this party...

sound was good and speakers sounded nice 95% of the night...

way too many people but shit, what can you expect with that lineup!

simply jeff played a nice diverse set and pulled a few tricks out of the bag, as well as playing some bassbin shakin huge tracks...

john b was the highlight of the night, i had seen him 2x before but this time was better because of the crowd. he was feeding of the crowd's energy (even if he did look calm and complacent) and i like to see that happen. his set was all over the board from some valve sound earthquake bass tracks, to melodic spaced out dnb, to electro dnb and of course the track "american girls"...

i pretty much stayed stationary the entire night due to the overabundance of people inside and the lack of a sane flow of human traffic:)

but to those i saw last night, just a quick shout...

Skoi, Winnie (nice to finally meet you), Paul, Aaron, Darrel, Ali (i hope you made it out to your car safely, i couldnt find you :( ) and last but definetly not least Michelle!!!! it was great getting to finally meet you :) i am sure we will see each other again soon!

peace to all who smiled and bounced last night...

thanks to grooveside and paying attendees for making this possible!

until next time...

haven't done a review in a while, but figure i'll do one for this. being a paying customer and all.

Music: Quite good. Very good in fact. Sapphire impressed, John B. was fucking awesome, Rob Noble was tearing it up, and gotta have made love for the funkist, spinning half dnb and then easily switching over to house without anyone (well, me at least) noticing. Grade = B+

Lighting: Left much to be desired, but I'm sure there are reasons. Not a real gripe, but could've done so much more with it. Grade = C

People: Ok, there was a lot to be desired, but you can't control your audience. I didn't see like anyone I know except for Ryan, Mo, Lacey, Ivan, Jeff, Courtney and maybe a handful of others. It seemed like 'newbies' night (waits for another 4 months for kids to start popping up saying this was their first party). Didn't see too many 'regular' kids out. A lot of 'smiling faces' but most of the ones I saw don't count. Was asked for pills more often than I have in a while and amazingly, by 2am almost everyone seemed a wee bit different than they were two hours ago. Lots of pushing and shoving and overall rudeness. Grade = D+

Venue: This is not a "rave" friendly venue. It's too small, and isn't meant to be 'packed' in. Capacity is what the fire-marshall deems is a safe number for the venue to hold... not a comfortable one. I think that place should never have more than 100-150 people in it at one time... It is however a really really nice club venue. In fact, if someone wanted to, they could make it a really bangin' club. If I could legally drink in this country, I possibly would have had a better time. But saying that "if I was drunk it could've been more fun" isn't a good thing. Grade = C-

Variable: Me. This was my first party back in the US since Paul Oakenfold last December. I guess I was a little disappointed and had expected a lot more. Maybe my time actually attending raves as a party-goer is dwindling.

Overall Grade = C (the music's what saved it)

Comments: Also, the party didn't seem to have a 'pull out all the stops cause we're celebrating two years of success!' feel to it. My opinion is anniversary parties are something special, whether it's a one year, two year, six year or seven year. An anniversary party is where you put everything you've earned, learned and experienced into one badass event (not necessarily a massive). I didn't get that feeling. It came off like a mediocre event, not piss poor but not worth my $20 (but hey, it's Grooveside's birthday, so not qualms I guess...). That was more of a party I'd make a cameo at to say "congrats on the past two years", mingle for a bit and bounce, not spend the whole evening. I wanted to leave @ 2, sadly my ride got all fuckered up (drunk) and had to have his cousin drive him home and I was stuck until the end. Only thing going for me was the few people I knew and the music. I probably looked like a bitter jaded raver at the show, and I probably sound like one now. It's depressing.

Ugh. I'm glad I put off checking out the Shongo Village for this long because it is a terrible venue. Wayyyy too crowded. Don't the fire codes limit how many people can be inside? I couldn't walk, not to mention dance and half the people were just rude. Luckily, the music was bumpin'- otherwise, I might have cried, 'cause I took the bus in and didn't have anywhere to go. For awhile there, I felt like I was in raver hell. The highlight of my night was when they opened the bar area up and then there was a little bit of breathing room. I plopped in a couch (where I could still hear the music- yay!) and didn't move until around four because I was feeling sick and couldn't handle pushing my way through the crowd for the trillionth time that night.

Overall grade: C-

good party. over all id say a B-. beats were sick, saw alot of old skool kids and met some new kats! NICE TO MEET YA'= trwicked, dragon, rain city raver. i met alot of people that were from out of state...they seemed to be really happy with the party, people, and vibe that seattle has. i had a much better time than Invasion. i was either too cold in the main room or too hot in the other room. my car wasnt broken into so i was happy about that. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GROOVESIDE!:p

i really wanted to go but i am totally broke 'cause i'm moving... what a badass lineup!

i remember superhighway being pretty small, though... like.. capacity of 500 maximum.. how many people were there? it seems like with a lineup that good there would be way more than 500 people who would want to go.. that lineup fucking rocked... this is one of the first parties in a long time that i missed and was like "damn, sucks that i missed that.."

Haha Johny boy I told you the bars close at 2 in the states! I told ya to make it down before last call!

Kim/Ivan: The capacity of the space used to be about 600. For those that havnt been recently, alot has changed. The capacity now sits at just over 900. Kim, wish you could have gotten ahold of me earlier so we could have got ya listed. :(

Quick Review:

John and Simply Jeff both rocked the house! John dropped alot of anticipated tunes. Trainspotters were live in effect!

Packed yet surprisingly cool. The newly discovered AC worked nicely combined with industrial fans. :)

Bar area was lookin really nice with the new additions. Fencing was put in the entrances blocking the bar area as apposed to being completely blocked off and another little chill area with view of the front stage was setup with some nice couches, lamps and other lounge moteef. It was nice to be able to have a drink with the Mrs. and still watch Sapphire break it off in the front room. :)

Big up Lazer Envy for the Yag and the lazer mirrors. Looked like we have 4 lazers goin on in there. I was feelin it! :D

Big up the Positive Systems massiv for the extra sound and extra lighting. Best lightshow ive seen at a club that size EVER. :D

Thank you to everyone for coming to our birthday party and making it something that will be remembered! See you at the 3 Year...............

Shouts to everyone who came out......so many friends, all lookin' like they were havin' a blast.

I had fun with the opening set, ended up playing close to two hours , I was runnin' outta records there. Thanx to all the peeps who were gettin' down for that. Sorry I didn't bring more CDs, when I'm always givin' 'em away, they go pretty fast, ;).

Yes, it was warm, but not even really Hot.

Yes, it was crowded, but the energy was thick and everyone was bouncin'.

dAb: You are a pimp and a nice guy, it was cool talking to you. Thanx for the CD. =) Wish I could've traded you, I never bring enough.

Mr. John B: It was ILL talking to a legend such as yourself, I'll defenitely shoot you a couple of the photos I got, classics I tell yah!
Also, thanx for the electro, it totally gave me the feel of your Visions album, Seattle needs to buy itself a clue and support more of that. The Up All NIght Remix was also absolutely smashing!

Simply Jeff: Sweet set, thanx for blessing us with your sound on our 2nd B-Day.

Lukki: It was nice to finally get to meet yah man, thanx for the ups! I hope we can spin a party together sometime.

To my peoples Jeff, Ryan and Emily it was great to see you guys in such great spirits, having a blast, rockin' out.

Alexia, Debbie, Romie, Kathleen, Sami, Dinga, Azure, Amy, JJ, Bro, Rob.....the list goes on and on. I luv you all, thanx for coming out and making it what it was.

Shouts to my Evergreen peeps, Kiel, Caroline and crew, along with Bonnie and Will of course, who made the drive with me.

Grooveside 2 Year.......Happy B-Day To All Who've Been There Since the Beginning.

Golly Gee. It was GREAT to meet you too. Nice to finally put a name to the face.
Had a great time with my roomie!
UMMMMM.........Shoshana, Evil Kat, Jason, Skoi, Brandini, Todd, Ivan....and everyone else. GREAT TO SEE YOU!!
I have not danced that much in about 6 or more months. I was loving it from the get go. Crowded? Aww, that's ok. One of the best crowds I've seen there so far. Not as drunken as some of the others.
Simply Jeff is the man! John B rawked as well. This is the first time I have half way enjoyed one of Aaron Simpson's sets!
Nice job guys. The fan in the main room was my bestest friend all night long.

I had a pretty good time, I came all the way out from IDAHO for John B and I was not let down. I was a bit suprised and skeptic that he was playing CD's but I actually liked the sound quality better. (my eardrums however, did not like the volume) so yeah after recovering from being temp deaf for about 12 hours, I finally got my happy self back to Idaho at approx midnight on sunday.

anyways you can see me in a couple pics on raveshack.

SIMPLE JEFF: YOU ARE A FREAKKING GAWD!! THE BEATS YOU THREW DOWN WERE INSANE!!
DAMN IT I WISH I COULD OF STAYED TO HEAR JOHN B, BUT >> MY RIDE WAS LEAVING....:(
I TOTALLY FAWKED MY ANKLE UP WHEN COMING OFF OF THE STAGE THANKS TO SOME FAWKING HIH-ASS RAVERS!!! IT STILL FAWKING HURTS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! :(

I was having a "low bio-rhythmn" night (what a fellow dancesafer's husband told me, heh) so I did not groove nearly as much as I normally do, bleh. Didn't help that I was sick (and still am ugh!) and inhaling everybody's second hand smoke was killing me.

But anyhow...had a good time as usual helping out with the Dancesafe booth. Tested quite a few pills. White smiley's were the bunk pills of the night. Definately were quite a few people getting sick from either those or other stuff though...just from basing what was going on in the bathrooms and a few "aromatic" areas in the venue.

As a couple other people mentioned it really was entirely too packed. I stayed camped out at the booth for most of the night because I didn't want to deal with fighting my way through the masses. At certain points it felt like a freakin' mosh pit, ugh! It definately felt unsafe with the amount of people in there. Every time I have gone to that venue I worry about what if a fire happened and this time it was really the most packed it ever was.

Music-wise: the NRG drove me crazy and made me grumpy until Simply Jeff came on with some soothing breakbeats. Enjoyed the tracks that John B laid down. Just wish I had danced more. :( Just did a lot of chilling and listening more than anything else.

And all of you who are talking about how deaf you are from the loudness: Dancesafe always provides free earplugs (though we appreciate donations :)). There's no excuse to be going deaf from doing what you love.

Heh, tarkKuin got a pic of us at the booth: http://www.angelfire.com/empire/tarkkuin/pictures/gs2/gs20061.jpg I'm the hippie closest to the brick wall in the pic.

I had such a good time at this show. Good people, good music, and a good reason to party all nite. Everyone played a good set and there was so much energy in the air to feed off all nite.
Thanks Jeff and Ryan for putting togather such a great anniversary show and keeping Grooveside one of the most respectable companys in Seattle!! The past 2 years have been the best, now let's see what the next two years has to offer....

I will say one more thing though, you should NOT HAVE DNB or JUNGLE going in both rooms at the same time. It was way to much and NO escape, othwise that, a great time :)

Whatta night! When I came to Seatte this weekend, I had no intentions of going partying....YEAH RIGHT! That lasted about 5 minutes! We got the the party around 11:30...parking was a bitch, but once I could hear the music...It was alllllll good! From the instant I walked in, I was pulled to the jungle room! There was great music all around, but GODDAMN WHEELZ!! I did not leave a 20 foot area for TWO AND A HALF HOURS!!! I danced my ass off....and then some! When most of my group left, I was still hanging on....using every ounce of energy I had, just to keep going! I saw alot of old friends...made a few new ones....forgive me if I forget your name next time I see you, but I will rememeber your faces!! Yes it was overly crowded.....I couldn't get into the bar because I forgot my ID!!! So that kinda sucked, but I prolly shouldn't have been drinking anyways! As soon as Wheelz finished, we went into the other room, and I was able to catch a little bit of Pauls set....and as always, HE KICKED ASS!!! Ithink that all in all (heat and crowdedness aside) this party gets a A- cause the music.......WAS THE SHIT!

As for the party - HOLY FUCK. John B. was simply fucking AMAZING. That 80's electro style shit was gettin' me smiling and groovin' at the same time......the d&b room was off the hook all night, Dowlz, Rob, Rama, all threw DOWN! Fitz - I know it shouldn't, but when I hear "Skoiboy" over the system like that, it just sends the biggest shiver down my spine - I love it:D. Flave, as always, was the shit - hopefully some of those pixx are up to par, heh......

But yeah - sweet fuckin' party guys......just wish I could fast foward to mine! Think about all d&b, main stage styleeee......oh yes......it's coming:D.

It's all about the music! My GAWD John B was amazing....I was stunned. I got there a bit late...in time for dab, which was nice and simply Jeff had me movin like no other, but then John came out and rocked my feet from underneath me. For a while there I couldn't move I was so enthralled!!!! I was hot and sweaty as fuck from dancin my ass off and my drunkin friends where ready to go home for some zzzzz's, but I made um hold out till the end of John's manipulative dnb and out of this world electro sounds came to a hault. Why doesn't seattle hear more shit like this is what I'm talkin about. Missed out on the masta flave's set, but Grooveside your party fuckin KICKED SOME SERIOUS ASS!! Happy 2 year.--->Cara

the party it self was off the hook but man do they need to learn how to ventilate that place. By 1:30 there were so many peole that it took me 20min to get to the bathroom and back to the main room. No joke. As for the overall vibe, great just great. Met lots of fun people who i hope to be seening at the party this weekend. If you missed out on this one, sucks for you.

It was so so nice to get back to the scene!!!!!! I've missed ya's! It was great seeing familiar faces, you all know who you are, you all have my respect and love!! Snow, you rock chica. Thanks for comin all the way down here to pick me up. I needed that party. Another for the books!! Well as usual, our locals represented mad skillz. Aaron Pimpson- swell. I really wish you would have dropped your DNB/Breaks set though!! (Breaks owns overall, in my oppinion). Wheelz- droppin some sick ass NRG. The few times that I did rest my feet in the bar, the beats just came and dragged me back to the floor!!! Flave- well, nuf said!! You are the Funkist. Although, I do wish, maybe someday, you will drop another Phat Azz breaks set to, like you did at BUMP!!! Jon B.- heard some ill shit, nice, but not consistant, few boring parts. Sweet first appearance though. Dab- kept me movin!!! And mutha fuggin Simply Jeff- Simply owned me!! His whole set kept me movin. And got the breakers pumped!! Well, I danced my azz off the whole night. The music was balanced between the rooms very well, if I wasn't quite feelin it in one room, the other was kickin serious ass!!!! Too crowded though. Although, I did see some good dancin with the 1ft. by 1ft. space that everyone had. Anyways, I'm out for now!!!! See ya's at the next one..............

Peace,
Billy O.

I was mainly there on business (hehe) promoting anyway. Although standing outside (cold as shit) for an hour+ due to complications with the guest list it didnt put a damper on my night. Didnt take long to flyer the shit out of that venue, cos daymn was it packed! For short while the main hallway (the space connecting both rooms) was like a fuckin raver mosh pit, that was not koo (need I say more). I was anxious to see John B since the first glance at the flyer for this party.Im familiar with much of his music, BUT WHEELZ having the same time slot kept my ass in the 2nd room for the entire thing. What can I say but, I Love the Hard Beats! I can never get enough of the UK shit.
Bill, you definately saved the 2nd half of my night, again! how do I get a cd of yours?
But regardless of all the great reviews on John B.'s set I certainly dont feel like I missed out on anything, except maybe sharing the fun with my friends. Cos naturally they are all about the drum&bass......or they just can stand nrg/ukhh.
Reviewing the party on a scale is hard since Im still a tad bit irritated by the whole entrything (but shit happens, its understood) & I didnt see any imported talent performances. So........... fuck yeah! I had a great time at this one GrooveSide, but I owe it all to Wheels, AND Dru for keepin a fresh hype on the crowd all the way through. NextLevel will alays have my respect. ;)
Shouts to ALL........... Tony in particular. Im so glad I finally bumped into you. This was a very positive experience for me. & I can hardly wait to ROCK IT! on saturday, on top of it being my birthday Im Madd pumped to see How TR/WICKED Does It =)
Hope to see ya'll then (Imperial Wickedness).
cos, ImOut,
Courtney

Oh yeah PS to GrooveSide.....*nods* congrats on the 2Y mark, best of luck with promotions in the year ahead.

Holy shit John B....ahhh yes! So great! Very nice & funny guy. You could tell he was havin a good time durin his set with his lil dance moves, lip syncs and gestures....Haha....I loved it! The mix of Adina Howard's-Freak like me was sick. Good stuff, good stuff.

As far as the venue....ummm.....no. Not good for a party like that. Wayyyyy too packed. Highly doubt I would go there again. Don't know what else it was about that place I was just easily irritated with people though. Blah. Oh yea and what the hell, after John B's set I bought a brand new bottle of water for the ride home, I was dying of thirst just waiting to take a big ass gulp of my H20..walked out the door (hadn't even broken the seal yet) and the dude just ripped it out of my hand and threw it in the garbage. I was pissed. After I blabbed somethin to him he's just like "Sorry can't bring it out". Ummmm okay. I could understand not being able to bring water in, but why does it matter if you bring one out? O welllll anywhoooo....that's all!

PEACE OOOOOUT!

I'm so with you on that one. I always hear people complaning about the venue no matter what venue it is. The Shongo Village is a great venue. Its not too dirty (but all raves are dirty). Might not be the biggest venue we have seen in Seattle, but it still is a good size. The rooms are far enough apart so that music doesn't leak over from room to room. And the best part is that we can host an all age event with a bar for the 21+....
So my theory is that kids will never be happy with whatever venue it is, and its sad because i look at other towns and there venue selection is even worse than ours!!

100% agreement. No shit man! Although Seattle is goin' through kind of a lil' venue drought, the ones that we still have are fuckin' sweet! I really love how the Shongo gives you that whole "underground" feeling all over again......

Rob - see you tonight, heh heh......

I have to agree with ya there! The fact that it was crowded and hot, made it even better. Lots of peeps=good. Lots of people=body heat. Dancing=even MORE body heat. Body heat=well, hot. Hot then in terms=good:)

it sounds to me like the people complaining about the venue were not complaining about the venue itself, but rather the amount of people which were packed into the venue.

it is very important for promoters to make sure they cut off the door entry when it becomes too crowded to dance, even if that means losing money...
