hey al... nice meeting you at imperial
the cd repair kits work to a certain extent, and if you are planning on getting one, then it's best to buy the electronic ones.. there's quite a few out there now, but i think that the cd doctor (i think that's what it's called) is the best one to get. haven't tried any others since that worked for me the first time around.
hope to catch ya at party again... my brother (jovan) says wassup, and he said it was cool hanging with ya in your barong at the party :D

CD doctor, eh!? I'll look out for it. I've seen those ones where you put some sort of liquid on the CD to get the scratches filled I guess. I guess it's all about trying all the different ones. I don't wanna spend too much on one. BTW, tell Jovan what's up and I'm sure I'll see ya guys around again.
Toothpaste, eh!? That's a new one.

I've heard of the toothpaste thing for *years* & have yet had anyone explain it to me beyond an enthusiastic "just put toothpaste over it!" I'm calling bullshit until I actually see it work, because "just putting toothpaste over it" does nothing but smear toothpaste on your c.d. (duh).
If it really "works" I have a whole stack of C.D.'s to put the hypothesis to work on.
So dish girlie. What's the deal? Have you actually tried this? Or just adding to the memepool?

If you dont really care about the CD too much, toothpaste could actually work for minor abraisons.... Those CD doctor things probably have some sort of similar buffing action.
Give it a shot!
Stick some toothpaste on there and rub it around with a cloth or something. Might work.
Eh, it works for silver tarnish :)

Tooth paste also works for scuff marks on linoleum. (Buffs it out without scratching)
I'm not sure if I want to try it on a CD though. I have a data CD that I am desperate fo fix, because it has every document that was on my hard drive, and it is the ONLY copy.
Someone let me know if this works for CDs.++

i could have sworn there were places that would professionally resurface a cd. but maybe im completely wrong.
if there are such places though, and its a very important data cd, id take it there instead of throwing colegate on it and praying.
see. this is whats wrong with cd type media anyway. one little scratch and too often the whole thing is screwed. its why i hate that video rental places are pushing dvd rentals down our throats. i have a hard time remembering a single instance where ive rented a dvd and havnt had it skip or hang in at least one part. on the other hand, a vhs cassette might have some tracking problems at the beginning but they usually get sorted out by the time the movie proper starts.
dvds = dumb.

For the plastic clear side i buff them with car polish,,,
for the silvered side i use a sharpie marker,,you can see the pits if you hold it up to light.

Many Hollywood Videos have an attached game store. In those stores they professionally resurface cds/games/dvds.
The valuabe information on disks is stored on the underside of the top side. Scratches on the bottom cause the laser to refract/reflect improperly.
The handhelds work well for shallow scratches. They take of the top layer and buff it a little.
The video store actually grinds the plastic bottom down as far as necessary to get past the scratch. Then they recoat it with a form of toothpaste like plastic and them buff it out. Works well. Three bucks or so each.

These little handheld gadgets do work on some cds. If you run your finger nail over the most severly scratched part and it's smooth then you're money. But they rub off the outermost layer of the cd, so if you do it over and over it'll damage a cd real bad. After using the Skip Doctor you should try not to scratch it too much. You can get them at http://www.bestbuy.com or at any best buy store.

isnt the skip doctor the thing that looks like a fishing rod? if it is the liquid they sell is just distilled water.
back to the toothpaste....you take the white kind *not the whitening* and you rub a thin layer over it....then sprinkle some water on it and kinda wipe it in and then off with your finger...then lightly wipe it dry....
its worked for mine

yeah toothpaste is also what you need to get the film off of your scuba goggles without hindering your vision with abrasions. as for the cd get the doctor, or else use a very fine grain sandpaper(like what you would use for the last step in resurfacing p-tex) on an electric sander(circular preferably) then buff, but it eats at the plastic and if you can potentially ruin your cd so make some practice tries on your old nirvana/blink182 cds
