I'm new to Seattle and would like any info at all on the experimental electronic scene or the experimental music scene (accoustic or electronic)in general. Also, any info on where local electronica gets played regularly or of venues known specifically for playing electonic music in general. Send any info to DarkBuddha@aol.com
Thanks a ton! See you on the scene.

hi. ive been known to play experiMENTAL music. in fact, i just spun an experimental set last friday at paradox. rumor has it some guy with a mental disorder had to run and get his medication while i was playing, because the music caused his disorder to act up. i still havent heard the full story, but i am very interested!!! does anyone know this guy??? if so, have him drop me a line.

oh boy, im getting sidetracked now. you might like my mixtape. it is semi-experintal, but not full-on experiMENTAL.

i dont really know of that many experimental gatherings/artists in seattle, but i do know that they do exist. i know there used to be an experimenatl radioshow on KCMU (90.3 on your FM dial) that was like saturday nights after midnight. i dont know if that show still exists, its been about 4-6 years since i last listened to it.

KCMU airs a show called expansions every Friday and Saturday night, starting around 10. Three dj's rotate the slot, and I don't know who all of them are. One of them plays good experimental stuff (i've heard black dog, boards of canada and aphex twin in his sets), the others play decent material. Nasir plays mostly downbeat and d&b, but doesn't get too experimental. I haven't heard much from the third. KCMU dj's never do a great job of announcing themselves :). I hope that helps, for what it's worth.

ooh, speaking of black dog, they did a great remix of Björk's "Anchor Song".

oh and i think that 'expansions' is on saturday nights 9pm-11pm and then sundays 8pm-10pm. i think. :)

What do you think of u-ziq's remixes of Hunter and All is Full of Love? I caught Bjork's tour in DC last summer, but only 'cuz I wanted to see her opening act. Turns out the sound system was adjusted so that Mike's set was barely audible, but Bjork's spitfire performance was a pleasant surprise.

Oh I love the µ-ziq remix of "Hunter"!! Especially what he did with her vocals in the beginning. Very eerie....I love it. :) And I really like all the bleeps and squelches and squaks that he put in. :D

I don't think I've heard his mix of "All is full of love" yet though. I'll try to find it and get a listen of it.

Yeah I caught her 'Homogenic' tour too. I went to the gig in San Francisco. It was an amazing show! And Mike's set was awesome as well. It was very well received too considering everyone was hyped up to see the ice princess. :) Especially since I had heard that at some of the shows on the tour people would chant "björk!" during his set!! How horrible and i'm glad they didn't do that in SF.

Mike's All is Full of Love remixes (there are two, one's a total farce) are decent, but they don't truly compare to his Hunter rehash, which I think is one of the strongest remixes in his repertoire. The 7-minute Love remix loops some of her vocals very nicely, and underlays her singing with some washy treble and bass that makes your speakers sound like they're dying. The song doesn't go anywhere for a solid 4 or 5 minutes, then climaxes in an oddly musical way, which is what Mike has always been good at. The one minute track builds up for about 50 seconds and fades out as soon as Mike brings a beat in. Annoying :)
You like other Mike Paradinas stuff? He's one of my favorite producers. Gak, work is boring.

Right on, Kim. My friend and I work for the underground at my school, and we're going to try to get the paper to pay for our trip. Maybe we can weasel our way into press passes also :) Failing that, my birthday's on the 7th, and I might be able to squeeze some generosity out of my relatives. How about Jega and Amon Tobin too? What a tight line-up.

I actually haven't heard a lot of his stuff. Just his Björk remixes and then the stuff he did live. I enjoy the work of his that I have heard though.
Yeah...the lineup for that Coachella festival is sick! Morrissey! Damn...I would die to see him! And then Gus Gus, BT, etc. etc. and on and on. Geez! Have fun if you get to go. :)

On the Bjork tour, Mike spun pretty much the same set every night, since his sound board could only be programmed with a limited number of channels. He used material almost exclusively from Lunatic Harness and Brace Yourself, though I think he tossed in a remix he was also working on at the time, and a few unreleased experimental tracks off of DAT. If you like what you heard at the show, see if you can preview Lunatic Harness somewhere around town. Brace Yourself isn't as stong an album, so I wouldn't buy it first. If you decide you like what you hear, my favorites (and highest recommendations) are Salsa with Mesquite and Bluff Limbo. Cheers.

If you would like to listen to some experimental music that's waaaaaaaaaaaay out there, I highly recommend Miranda July.
