View Full Version : Boycott TV coverage of war

If you have a dislike of war in general, this war in particular, the commercialization of war, violence on television, fear as social control etc., I urge you to avoid watching TV for your news on the war, once it starts.

Read a paper, listen to the radio, look it up online, just ignore it...whatever... but boycott the horrible 24/7 brainwashing that is sure to be served up on the major networks. If you've ever complained about the biased slant of the media, exercise your own personal choice, and make a difference.

Better yet, kill your TeeVee for good.

It's a tool of social programming, and the signal to noise ratio of TeeVee today in terms of actual information content is very, very small.

In the last 10+ years with no TeeVee, I suspect that I've read dozens more books, had way more great sex, and spent more time watching sunsets. . . all with time that would have been sucked into the TeeVee otherwise.

The most effective form of social control that has ever evolved is the TeeVee in modern, Western society. Far more effective in exercising control than any previous totalitarian state has ever been.

Peace,

basketball is great! and i can't afford to fly all over the country and watch all the games, so i park my ass on the couch with a beer, scratch my nuts, subject myself to horrible commercials and let my mind wander into a world where nothing matters. reading kicks ass but sometimes you just need to veg.

I wish I had or knew somebody with the technical know-how to develop a device that would permanently disable massive amounts of CRT units. Just think of the chaos that would occur if every CRT within a 10 mile radius of downtown <fill in large American city here> stopped working. It would be absolutely beautiful - shit would shut down.

Not all print/online sources of information about the inevitable war are commercial or influenced by advertisers, as the majority of "news" content on TV seems to be. There's some great independent newspapers that folks can access online:

Christian Science Monitor (http://www.csmonitor.com/)

Independent Media Center (http://indymedia.org/)

Salon (http://www.salon.com)

Even though TV generally sucks, a few balanced sources on TV for war and international news are the BBC news on PBS and news broadcasts from the CBC.

Ah, back on the tv bashing again. Seems to be very popular here.

Next time you go through the grocery store take a gander at the books on the shelves. Shit is shit no matter what it's stuck on. There are just as many crappy books as there are bad tv shows, and your beloved internet is chock full of misinformation and "totalitarian" lies. I don't need to throw my tv out as I control it, and not the other way around. Telling people to quit tv altogether is just as dogmatic as a preacher telling you to not drink anymore. Be a grown up, know your limits, and keep your wits about you. It's not something to be afraid of; it will sit in the corner and stay if you tell it with force.

Shit floats to the top of any medium. --How much crappy, bland house music do I have to hear with the same beat and a girl that goes: "Ahhhh!" over an analogue mumble --You gotta work hard at finding the jewels on the bottom. Case in point: Six Feet Under is one of the best shows I've ever seen and I never miss an episode. The Simpsons has the most amazing blend of humor and social commentary. And like Lex Luthor says in Superman I:, "some people can look at a gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe." <laughs at own geek humor>! And is there really anything wrong with wanting to watch a little tv crap now and then? IMHO, it's okay to "clock out" once and awhile.

And let's be honest, how many sunsets have YOU missed by wasting countless hours in front of YOUR "approved" box? All that wasted time chasing your tail and arguing when you could be meeting new people, pointing at the clouds, or watching tv shows that are just as well written and enlightening as the low res products of your cherished authors.

And as far as sex goes, what if you're having sex while recording it on the tv? Does that count? [/QUOTE

I have to give props. . .This is the most intellgently argued post I have had the opportunity to read on this ignorance-reaking-board!! I'm fucking serious!! *Gives plastorm the good-game-ass-slmack!*

Yeah, that's like asking us to respect the Panamanian snafu or Bay of Pigs. Pfft! I'll start respecting the US military chiefs-of-staff when they stop putting their hands in the pie that's clearly labeled international terrorism. I don't diss the grunts; they're just doing their job and most of them are young, minority-status, and looking for GI bills.

You have yet to show that respect. Your remarks and that teachers are not going over well with people who do actually care about the troops. Save your BS. We all know your talking BS becuase you have never expressed nothing but the complete opposite of patriotism here.

wrong.
I have made it clear on many occasions that my disent is with the administration & their policies.. not the troops..

If you think being patriotic means supporting all that the president supports - you are an idiot.. and dont deserve be responded to any longer... Im disapointed that you can not distinguish criticism of policy from 'disresecting troops' - - - but Ive come to expect nothing more from you.. you are blind..

Wrong your blind! Not supporting the policies is one thing but once the war is started it's un-American to be bitching while your fellow citizens in the military are on the ground fighting and possibly dying for your right to dissent, and bitch and compain like a good little leftist in the first place. That's why I asked for you to show some fucking respect. Obvious you not wanting to do so shows us all your level of respect.

Jason, those troops aren't "fighting and possibly dying" for any American's right to dissent. That right is not threatened by anyone in Iraq. It may be under threat from those in Washington, but not by any Iraqi.

May I suggest you step back, leave the "old" war rhetoric behind, and have a good long think about what exactly those troops may be dying for.

The best way to show respect for US soldiers is to get them the fuck out of there.

Boyd with all due respect weve been through this debate before you guys have been always wrong about Saddam he does have weapons of mass distruction in fact he launched 2 of them off this morning. So no Washington has been right all along, and many of you guys don't like reality. I am however glad you didn't resort to being an idiot like 186 you were civil in trying to explian to me your POV. I pat you on the back.

Take care,
