View Full Version : Should we make a "war against helicopters"?

As sad as the Apache loss is, I'm not sure why everyone is shocked at the loss of such a machine.

Consider this.

In this operation, a good percentage of our coalition losses, so far, are due to helicopter crashes/malfunctions. You hear about them alot even when we aren't at war. Some chopper goes down, and it's sad, but we really should have expected as such.

There is a reason why the 101st Airborne Division is the only air assault division in the world. That reason is that choppers have got to be the most dangerous flying machines developed by man, superceded only by the airship, and quite possibly the V-22 Offsprey. They provide a huge tactical advantage in close combat, but anyone who uses them is asking for short-term losses, especially when going up against Bagdad even in this hour.

Just an observational two cents from your favorite Butt Rocker.

Helicopter = The most manueverable airborn weapons platform on earth, using the most unstable airframe imaginable powered by an engine that vibrates the entire thing violently.
Its amazing they fly at all.

I was looking at the picture of the "downed" apache and, considering its in one piece sitting upright on its landing gear, my first thought was that the Apache may have broke down not been shot down.

It's Osprey, not offsprey.

My thoughts exactly. There aren't any bullet holes or any damage of any kind visible on the chopper. And the Apache is one of the most heavily armored choppers out there.

Incidently the CH-46 Seaknight helicopter is an older relative to the CH-47 Chinook. We call those things "deathtraps".

Yeah werent the first deaths in the Iraqi "theater" attributed to Brittish Seaknights crashing?

What do you think are the ramifications of the Iraqis getting their hands on an apache fully intact?

And off topic but... from the reports there's a massive storm front heading into Iraq. What sort of effect do you think it will that have on allied activity. Nothing? Grind it to a halt? Slow it down & maybe allow the supply lines to firm up?

Well you could do that or shift gears a little. Remember that before the army could even get the Apaches prepped up for the Kosovo conflict, the A-10s pretty much took care of most the important targets.

Hmmn. A whole thread on war machines. What it must be like to be entertained by such trivial conversation....

20 bucks goes to the first person that can correctly guess the entity that brewed up to the storm over Iraq.

If you're talking about that pic that's been circulating in the news on drudgereport and cnn.com, the one with all the iraqis in front of and up on the apache... I believe that's the one that was attacked while it was landed, and the pilots immediately surrendered.

Yah...I have a feeling alot of them were along for the ride when everything was in off-topic. But I also suspect alot of them don't really have a leg to stand on right now either.

Nope. We don't have a leg to stand on. We're also mimicking the Establishment to come when it finds out the only WMD are in this country: SUV's.

MS Since when do i register as a threat? I think you've conveniently forgotten I don't battle people, only injustices. So next time you're in the bathroom reading some conservative rag and jacking off to Bush's State of the Union pics, leave a couple of drops for ol' AXE wouldya? He's far more worth it.
