A friend of mine is learning to spin for his highschool senior project, he wanted me to help him research how much equipment would cost to buy. What would a good setup be for a beginner? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Okayyyyyy, what does he want to spin, and what does he want to spend. With more info, we can give better answers.

If they're really serious about mixing than they should invest in really good turntables. Don't let anybody tell you belt drive or 200 dollar tables will work, they will play records, but they're incredibly hard to mix on and no good to start with. Technic's 1200's or the newer Vestax tables are great (Technics are the industry standard, the vestax may be better, but you'll never play on em live) Needles and a mixer are important too but not as important as the tables. All in all for a decent setup you're going to spend at least 1000 dollars if not more. Anything less isn't any fun to mix on and you'll only end up replacing it a year out images/smilies/frown.gif

He wants to eventually get into it, but think right now he just needs something that will allow him to do the basics, so probably something on the cheaper end would work.

There's the "DJ in a Box" setup that you can buy from Guitar Center for like 400 bucks. This includes mixer, turntables, slipmats, and cartridges. Also Check out musiciansfriend.com. They can give you an idea about products and cost. Or just go to Guitar Center.

stay away from dj in a box, youd be better off to get some used 1200's for a bit more money. check the news paper, ebay, and any music shop for used equipment. the dj in a box is a rip off for the sucker who doesnt know better. if you want to get serious with it, make it an investment.
