If you already know for a fact that you want to DJ, then do it right.... You'll thank yourself later. Buy some SL1200 Technics tables, both M3D's and MKII's are what you want to look for. You can find a used set for $700 to $900 or so. The type of stylus that you get depends on what you wanna do. Like:
I) Just beat match
II) Spin at club or just at home
III) Do you wanna scratch?
IV) What types of venues would you like to
end up spinning in?
Choose your vinyl carefully. It is VERY easy to listen to something once and like it, but get it home and be disappointed with your purchase. Check out some magazines like:
MIXMAG or
DJ Magazine (Both UK)
...And check out their top 10 lists and read reviews on new releases. I have just recently starting spinning so I understand how you feel. Hopefully this points you a lil' bit in the direction you wanna go. Let me know if I can help out w/anything else.

or ya just spin what makes you fill good and who gives a shit if anyone likes it. Music does wonder to the soul.

If you let em make you, they'll make you papier-mache. At a distance your strong untill the wind comes, then you crumble and blow away.
If you let em fuck you then there will be no foreplay. But rest assure, they'll screw you complete til' your ass is blue and grey

fuck the top ten list
using that as your guide you will end up right where all of the other namelees dj's are.. playing the same old shit. Follow your soul to your music. When picking out tracks, get the ones that make you feel something inside, or ones YOU think will do damage on the floor, not what mixmag thinks. thats my .02 cents.

when buying records (underground hip-hop or house sometimes) I look and listen for stuff that I would want to hear at a party. Keep that in mind when you are at the listening stations.

Look for stuff that makes you want to move just listening to it at the record store or online. I follow this philosophy when writing music. If while making it, it doesn't make me wanna jump up and down and throw my hands in the air, it's not good enough to play. images/smilies/smile.gif Also, don't buy lots of crap and filler. To get a good selection of records you'll want to listen to lots of music; both new songs and old classics. It's better to pay more money for a good hard to find track that will really go over well, then to buy a bunch of boring records that don't really do anything.

Stay away from any top ten lists. Unless you don't mind sounding like every other DJ! Follow your heart, or better yet your ass! When you listen to a record and your ass bounces-buy it.
