not to burst your bubble, but lasers are essentially useless as a stand-alone weapon. Woohoo, with careful aiming you can blind someone from a mile or three away.
Well shit, we can blow you up with an artillery shell from 15 miles, or a cruise missile at 100 miles. In the military, lasers are useful for guidance systems or identification, and that's about it.
My guess is that these guys were joking around with their new guidance toy and made the mistake of painting someone who actually noticed.
