TWO men whose lives became linked in the conflict with Iraq are today heading off for new lives as pensioners. The United Nations chief weapons inspector Hans Blix, who believes the US and Britain were set on war all along, is retiring, as is General Tommy Franks, the US general who fought the war the politicians insisted on.
Blix is sure to continue to insist weapons inspections were working before he was forced to leave Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.
Career soldier Franks, by contrast, is likely to retire to his native Texas to lead a much quieter life, emerging only to give lucrative lectures on the US speaking circuit. He is sure to earn millions basking in the success of his military strategy.
