allright just starting a discussion for everyone to pass on some EQ tendancies to share...

Ragga (what i spin mostly) is very similiar to hip hop, so your lows can be pretty much cut without sounding too ridiculous when fading in or out.

I generally start with my lows killed, and mids dropped. When the timings right I kick my mids and highs in, while dropping the highs on the other track (gotta love the vestax07). On the record I'm mixing out of I eventually take out the highs if I want to run my drums, or with vocals I drop my lows. With ragga there's also always just the option of killing it right then and ther.

For some reason in DnB or jungle i rarely do anything drastic with my mids, as a little bit goes a whole way. Also I notice with DnB and jungle i tend to leave my lows running in the end and kill my highs, while with ragga I usually run my highs and kill my lows.

Do you have any common EQ patterns or tricks?

I don't know. Jizosh and I don't really waste our time spining dnb or Jungle. ;)

haha. i do spin dnb and jungle from time to time. i just tend to mix it the same way as house, though. the only thing to really watch out for when mixing dnb is a nasty bass overlap. i dunno...i hate describing how i mix. so i'm done now.

Great. Just because I spoke for you, you had to go and defend yourself. Fine. I too, shall admit to owning about 30 dnb and jungle tracks. If records we're so damn expencive, I'd probably have more, because dnb is really fun to play.

Alas, I ultimatley have very little to add in the way of constructive discussion on this thread. Sorry, jesse.....

heh...honestly...back when i was getting into DJing...i used to watch DJs like chloe, mike stevens, and mark e. quark on groovetech, back when they had the stream with all the cameras. and i would go to shows at mr. spots chai house and the juice bar in seattle and park myself in front of the DJ (annoying as it may have been) until i got some idea of what mixing looks like. after that it was all just fucking around with what sounded best to me. and i'm still doing that. listening to DJs like mark farina or doc martin mix, then getting ideas, running home to try them out...etc...etc.

When spinning jungle on an 07Pro, its rather hard to drop the mids because of the significant level jump. Most times I only try to trim the mids and the highs. Keep the kick going through and mix it like breaks. Ya juss gotta have a light touch when it comes to the mids. By just dropping the highs and lows, the mix sounds garbled to me.
Yeah Jizosh Iknow what you mean about Mike. I used to stand and watch him mix here in P-town all the time along with Brad, Aquaman, and Rigid.
Peace,

When doing quick little cross-fade tricks with dnb/jungle, it is often good to raise the mid momentarily to go with the beat you are isolating... especially if you are doing so at a time when the record you are fading in and out is playing during an intro, or some other time without much bass.

Wow... that is really a lot harder to describe in words than it is to do.

i usually just cut the mid since most of the basslines for any kinda music are more mid range than they are in the extreme low end. you will find some bass in the low end of course, but the pulse of any song whether it be house, trance, hip hop, disco, etc all rely on the kick drum. i cut the low end a little bit on the track that i am not mixing in just so i can keep things a little fresh and keep a pulse, but keep it with the new track.

it all depends on what you hear and what sounds good. everyone has a different opinion of what sounds good so go with instinct and what works for you. it also depends on the song. it takes practice and it helps to know your crate and what works with what. that will always change since new tracks come out all the time, but hey... that is what makes dj'ing fun, right?

i use a djm 500 and i usually will turn the lows down to half or 1/3 volume and highs and mids about half or 2/3 volume match them up and bring it in then after 8-16 bars turn up the mids and highs to just below the level of the track playing ride that for a while then switch the mids and highs on the two tracks so the new one coming in is rominent but rolling with the original b-line then when you come to the enevitable 32nd bar/ major change in the tune switch up the b-lines now the new tune is playing but the old tunes eqs are where the tune now playing used to be for added spice you can juggle the b-lines and get all crazy with it or fade it out then.
