View Full Version : Givin' up the tricks
Giving up the tricks,.....................What is your favorite trick for mixing? I like the nipple tweak(I'm sure the kids will get some mileage from that one
) the one I'm talking about here is employed to catch up or slow down the platters to sync a beat matched pair of records.(instead of fishing w/the pitch faders to bring the mix into sync, which also works well if you are good w/ adjusting the tempo on the fly w/the pitch control) These are two way to achieve the same desired result. Now lets hear some heated debate on this new topic! I SAID NOW!!! I'll be posting new tips for you tricks, errr,..umm, I mean tips for YOUR tricks soon. Should we gaurd this knowledge like some selfish fucks? The answer is no

one tip......if you can mix, like, rock'n'roll songs? like, say Bjork or Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails something??? get a live LP......play one of the last songs, or one of the songs with long, extended crowd cheering......then turn off the rekkid, literally, switch the off knob, while bringing in a different rekkid.
easiest way ever to switch genres from hiphop/D&B to breaks/house, or vise versa...someone told me once that technically, its not true genre-switching, but more like cheating.
someone else once told me, "if ya ain't cheatin, ya ain't tryin!"
anyway, I think thats the only real "trick" that I know, everything else is just some sad-assed version of the old school tried-and-true methods.......just basically making two records blend in synchronicity.

I prefere the no touch mixing, where you dont touch the record at all.
Fav trick to punch in a second record, drop it back down, then work it between mid and full voulume punching it on a hard snare, or kick.

umm, i'm not much of a turntablist...but one thing i'm tinkering with right now is cutting up vocal samples, while time-stretching them manually to fit a beat. you can do it buy touching the record you're scratching firmly with one finger to slow it down. so you can take a sampple that is some guy speaking a sentence, but form fit it to whatever beat you choose. just a fun trick to use when making a funk/hip-hop/trip-hop mixtape.
good question, bElo...

oh, oooh! and also vocal/spoken word rekkids! stuff like stand-up comics, or poets, um.....like, I have Richard Pryor, Jonathan Livingston Seagull narrated, and Jello Biafra for example, just talking...
so you can take one of your really minimal, kinda boring tracks, lay it down, then just play one of the spoken word tracks....all of a sudden its "poignant" =)

screw it i wrote a huge article on mixing old jazz records to funk and it flipping deleted it because of my stupid laptop mouse. I will be back later as i don't have time
Curious about the jazz mixing tricks,........c'mon give it up. Also you can use your finger on the edge of the platter to slow down a record that is slightly ahead of the other one. Get to practicing!

You don't have to do this, but one time when I had a Roland DJ2000 mixer, I plugged some guitar cables from the stereo outputs, then into my mackie mixer. Boom, instant effects. You'll need the right plugs to go into guitar pedals, and most the time they're mono, so you either get 2 different pedals, or 2 of the same one. So now distortion, compression, flange and phasing can be in your beats arsenal....

Oh yeah, if you get a dedicated rackmount effects module, you can get crazy delays and reverb for scratching....It's hella fun......

I like the one where you get a small styrofoam drinking cup and cut it down to make it smaller. punch a hole in the top with a pencil. Place a small straw through the hole and attach it to the nipple of the platter. Turn the cartrige upside down and move the weight to the back of the tonearm. Place your favorite rekkid on the cup and push start on the turntable. Place the needle near the end of the track (because it spins backwards) and bam, instant reverse without the use of a processor. Try this. It's a little harder to beatmatch, but it is possible. It's very cool to have 2 of the same rekkids, one set up like this and the other set up normal. Now switch them back and forth and mix 'em. Very cool. This is one of my favorites.

You gotta show me how that's done....I find it hard to picture in my mind, but I believe you. I'd just have to see it....
