do you go through any superstitious or ritualistic exercises before you spin?

i first pull a stack of records that im wanting to hear - then i arrange them based on loose recollection of bpm & style (slow to fast) or by previously successfully matched segways, ill sprinkle a few off-beat tracks in between to create some ebbs within the mix, as well as creating a pad from which to launch a bomb track. . . once ive got a good feeling about the sets potential.... I'll then have a smoke, and some cool beverage, then go back through my set, and make a few last minute track order decision changes, .. . . . crack the nuckles, and hit 'start' / 'record'....

sometimes it works perfectly - sometimes i wonder what the hell I was thinking..

what do you do to prepare for a set?

go off somewhere with my friends and smoke a bowl together while i envision what the set is going to be like.. it helps to hang out with my buds right before i go up so i'm not nervous

sometimes i slip a peice of bologne in my backpocket just for fun, helps me feel less intense and makes for a good snack about 1/2 way through..

I have a few rituals for my spinning-

On the day of a show I won’t touch any turntable until I am supposed to spin.
At home I start spinning downtempo before going into anything else it helps to build my forcefield so to speak and get me into my zone where no one can screw with me.
I won’t spin at a show until I have been there at least an hour to soak up the atmosphere and slow my mind down

There are other little rituals I have but I only discuss those with my therapist. Peace

I have this thing against playing 4AM. Every night that I've played 4AM something goes Awry: I loose my carts, the party gets shut down, i get into a argument with girlfriend wich leaves me sleeping on the couch, my records get dumped on the ground, my side of the 2x4 setup doesn't produce any sounds.... etc etc... EVERY-SINGLE-TYME. 4AM hates me.

Take a big fat pre-set shit.

Clears the mind.

Nothing worse than holdin' one back when you are trying to focus on playing records.

1. Eat a 12 piece bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

2. Drink a Coca-Cola Super Big Gulp.

3. Eat three Hostess Twinkies.

4. Let out a big belch.

5. Wipe hands with a lemon scented wet-nap.

6. Take a long nap.

7. See post above (^^^^).

One more step added to the above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

9. Insert Tequila shots as the set goes on!

Perfect way to get yourself overtly pumped up for a set...
And it will help u play better....or at least... it will help you think that....

Why not? you can turn a 2 turntable set into a 4 turntable set just by seeing double...

And you can easily turn a nice 4/4 kick drum beat into a shoes-in-the-dryer racket like Don and Won do during every mix!

Shoes in a dryer sound cool. Especially when you add a jacket with lots of zippers in the mix... and some loose change... just about comprises a Charlie Deep mix CD.... Proper.

I like to look at a bunch of porn and jerk off before I play. While I'm rubbing tha ole' Powerprawn I dream of all the groupies I'm gonna get when I am one day as big of a superstar as Keoki.

Seriously though, I'm actually quite surprised that people figure out their sets before they play. I might pull a few records that I REALLY want to play out but not a whole set.

I like to do a bunch of random acts of kindness as far as a week in advance leading all the way up to the event. Even if my set doesn't meet my own overly zealous standards I still felt good all week :)

PS: I don't really approve of planned sets...

I'm gonna have to agree with a few people a couple posts back...

Nothin' better then having a few beers before and through your set...

Then a few or eight more afterwards.. ;)

and they can keep trying, cuz my ears tell me otherwise ;)

I always wear my old navy "DJ" boxers when I have a big DJ gig. I think I've come to the conclusion that they make me trainwreck

meanwhile, somehow not sleeping and being cracked out makes me DJ better... so maybe that's my new ritual... no sleep...

I never start drinking until I start playing. I find that I've gotten too drunk and fucked up some mixes toward the end of my set.

I also think there's some cosmic force that doesn't want me playing outdoors. I never, ever have problems with equipment until I'm out doors, and it's not always in the woods either. I've played on concrete, and in back yards, and something always goes wrong.

I ALWAYS have to start with the first record on the left turntable, or it doesnt feel right. My friends forced me to start on the right once, and I really sucked. A lot.

i now have to eat a handful of 'seattles best' coffee beans one at a time while i mull over compilation & set selections while circling the tables in a counterclockwise direction at least 13 times like a dog getting ready to lay down... then I have to sift through my bins for 6-8 minutes... crack the nuckles , shake a fist, and give myself a quick couple of slaps across the face.. and im ready for business..

anyone else, ?

how about the heavyweights?

i used to have ish' recording mixes. i would record a mix 10 or 15 times till i got it right. thats after i would have my set and mixpoints figured out and printed out. i was never able to smoke and spin. i cant do much after i smoke, 'cept read. Now i have a ritual of breathing really slowly while getting my shit together, unwrapping my phones, ect. i like to stretch while taking one deep breath, stare at the crowd for a sec and read em for a bit.

get their mood in my head, and try to exhale my energy into my hand as i plug in my phones. silly, but... works.

I have a few. Nothing too exciting really. I made it a real big point to make sure I could do almost anything, including start on either deck, should the need arise.

My only real bug is when I reverse the crossfader so I can scratch on the right turntable... I scratch a choon in, mix for a bit, forget that I reversed the fader, finish my mix, and than SLAM over into silence for like a split second. At this point I quickly realize I reversed the fader, and quickly unreverse it so the tune I wanted to have playing comes on.

It's very instantaneous... but I do it far too often for my own good.

When Im mixing at home, I always have to smoke some chronic, well alot of chronic, it helps me focus, and get inside the music more. Drinking too, although I dont drink as much as I smoke. While im smoking and mixing I like to drink either coffee of even better a energy drink(rockstar or Wired rule). This is essentual for me gotta have some energy, however I get way twitchy when I do these two things.

When I play out, I play like shit stoned. So im rarely stoned during a live set. Im almost always solber, it really helps to have a drink but not being drunk. I would say that being solber is best while spinning out, at least for myself.

The only ritual I have is putting a few records in front that I'm more apt to play. Other than that....I can't think of anything. I just go up and wing it.

I always know how many beers somone has in them cause they usually suck the worst! lol I mean a beer is cool, I don't drink shit liquor atleast 2 hours before I spin usually I do about 3-4 lines of white powder then follow the white rabbit to the turntables and comense djing lol, I usually stand behind the decks 15-20 mins before my set and get mentally focus I jump around and stretch some, back when I hung with my friends dan and dave I'd make them give me a little pre dj blow job always good to blow the load when your spinning so you don't get blue balls lol.

I have a massive superstition about practicing a set before I play it...Whenever I've decided that a set should go from a-b-c something happens ; I'll miss a cue or something and it will come out not sounding the way I wanted it to and I get flustered. I get around this by selecting tracks, playing them together in a couple different ways and then leaving them in the order that satisfied me most...Beyond that, no practice.

i dont agree with drunk... for me..
i drink til i get that warm fuzz. took me along time to get that just right and then sustain it.... just before i smoke a cig, drink a whole glass of water slowly and i stand behind the current dj, not directly but off to the side and i watch the crowd i just zone out... it took me awhile to get that going too. but you know when your drivin and suddenly your home your not sure how cause your off in whereever. i know i know dangerous and whantnot, maybe i'm just spacey but i watch the crowd and i just let myself completely go... then i just step up, plug in and i dont plan shit i let it come to me ll zen like.

oh yeah
wear comfy clothes, cause image is for eyes but music is for the soul
