Platinum Records (address): Pike Street, one block east of broadway.
F8 (address): Broadway. Far North end, accross from bus stop/orpheum/shitty convenience store. Right where they're building a new apartment tower, and broadway splits to the right and to the left is the Harvard Exit Theatre.
There's one up in wallingford, too....They have lots of good used...I think its on 45th

Zions Gate has great records and there way nicer than the dicks in platinum.
its like 2 blocks east of platinum.
there is also Down Low records on denny & olive under supercuts.
the store in wallingford is called Jam Records--good used stuff in there for shure.

I second zions gate.
im from alaska, my gf and I decided to goto seattle one weekend and check out the shops. We hit up f8, platinum and zions gate. Zions gate by far impressed me the most. Of course im a sucker for house music, so I could be biased. But the guys at platinum we're kind of aprehensive, especially when I told them I owned a production company in Alaska.

tell me about it. I usually go twice a week and tour the whole record store route. Go to Platinum, Zion and Down low! Down low is good for finding records that you have been looking for awhile. Great selection of house.

Nothing beats F8....(in Seattle) imo.
Plus you could always bargain with them.
STEVE: "Hey dude, the record is scratched. Let me get it for 5 bucks"
F8: "Let me listen to it."
**listens to it**
F8: "Dude, it sounds fine."
STEVE: "Alright, alright.....7 and that's my final offer"

While not everyone at platinum is friendly and attentive, I'd certainly disagree with you. Zach and Sean are plenty hospitable and though I'm a DJ (why else would I be in there buying records, unless I was an audiophile) I am by no means super cool.

I would probably be a little uptight also, if I had 17 year olds ask me for "The Launch" or Alice Deejay and tell me how they are going to be superstar DJ's 3 times a day.
The reason why most of them are unfriendly is because the majority of the people who walk in there are not practical or logical and expect that because they walk in the store they are already superstars.
They are very lenient and cool with rentals and equipment and if you show them that you are grounded and possess common sense, you may find that they will have respect for you.

well maybe i just dont spend enough time in there store---i usually end up in zions gate anyhow..
I understand the point about dealing with dumb asses all day but still---they have got a pretty kick ass job.
anyhow its not that big of a deal ---most record shop workers are not all that friendly after dealing with the same questions day after day........
I usually find i get the best records when i just dig through the stuff rather than have workers pull it for me---so i cut out the problem with dealings of disgruntiled shop workers.

Dunno about anyone else, but I tend to spend a hell of alot more money at any business that treats me decently and with respect then a similar business that treats me (or others around me) like crap.
I could care less if they hate their job or people or whatever, I'm there to spend money.
:)
Generally I think the people at F8 are pretty nice. After being at Platinum a few times, and with some friends they have seemed to loosen up a bit with me in general.
However, I think that should normally work the other way around where they are trying to woo over the customer to continue shopping there.

Down Low's dope
F8 is friendly + trance/house based (wont find a grip there)
Platinum has always been raunchy to me, treat me as if I shouldn't be touching vinyl. So go in there once in awhile, but not often.
Still haven't been to Zion's Gate althou I hear they got a grip of DnB/Jungle there....so need to check it out soon.

I've had success finding records at Platinum, the people are nice. However, it's tough to get away from the "walls"
You know what i'm talking about ... how every employee puts up their "picks", and regardless of how good they are (some of em are straight ill), they get hella played out really quick.
stay away from the wall (telling myself), dig into the used bins, find those other sick cuts. :)
BTW, if ANYONE sees my groovetech had anywhere, let me know (hehehe). there is not a day that goes by without me longing for that hat back ... i lost it some drunken night. :(

lol i know what you mean ! I really like platinum but zion's gate has more of a community feel in there because its kind of packed together and they usually have some insence goin plus some boomin reggae beat .
When i go I can sit there at a listening station for about 3 or 4 hours at a time and i am never bothered by a frequent horde of other people wanting to get on a station themselves. The employees are more than happy to pull for you regardless of if you know what you want exactly and they are usually ready to have a long conversation with you if you are just lookin to pass some time or take a break from listening.
BIG UP TO ZIONS GATE
Its two blocks up from platinum on the other side of the street so please stop in and check it out on your next visit to platinum.

Can you give me more information on the reptilian race, what do they do on the sixth level? [The area called Nightmare Hall.]
A -- The worker caste does the daily chores, mopping the latex floors, cleaning the cages, bringing food to the hungry people and other species. It is their job to formulate the proper mixture for the type one and type two beings that the Draco Race has created. The working caste work at the labs as well as at the computer banks. Basically speaking, the reptilian races are active at all levels of the Dulce Base. There are several different 'races' of aliens that work on the east section of level six (No doubt some collaborating 'Nordic' factions included. - Branton). That section is commonly called "the alien section." The Draco are the undisputed masters of the 5-6-7 levels. The humans are second in command of those levels. I had to ARGUE with one large Draconian 'boss' frequently. His name is difficult to verbalize, Khaarshfashst [pronounced throaty kkhhah-sshh-fahsh-sst]. I usually called him 'Karsh,' and he hated it. The Draconian leaders are very formal when talking to the human race. These ancient beings consider us a lower race. Karsh called me "Leader Castello," but it was used in a sarcastical way. However the worker caste is friendly enough, as long as you allow them to speak first. They will answer if you address them. They are very cautious beings, and consider most humans to be hostile. They always seem surprised when they found many of the humans were open and trustworthy. There is no fraternizing with the aliens off hours. It is forbidden to speak to any alien race [in the halls or an elevator] without a clear business oriented reason. Humans can talk to humans, and aliens can speak to aliens, but that is as far as it goes. At the work site, however, it's different. There is "free speech" in the labs. The camaraderie found in the labs also reaches the computer banks section. In those areas, everybody talks to anybody. However, everything changes the minute you cross the threshold of the hall. Instantly, all conversations become strictly formal. Hard as it was, several times I had to arrest some one, simply because they spoke to an alien. It's a strange place.

Yeah I went to easy street records the other day, the records are used, some of them in really shitty quality, but always give them a good inspection before you grab them to go to the counter. The place is right across the street from pagliaccis (the best restaraunt ever!). Dunno the address, I just remembered the place because I love pagliaccis so I decided to drop by. Parking can be a bitch sometimes, but hey, where isn't it a bitch?

I would have to agree with almost everyone saying that Zion has a very mom and pop feeling, while Plat-Mart has good selection its all about who has those latest Drum and Bass cuts and somtimes Zion kinda lacks on that but I always just hit both stores up....more selection is always better.

05-21-2004, 02:43 PM
yeah, ive noticed Zions Gate has a great selection of records sorted by label & lots of used records to flick through. - Plat-mart is indeed more commercial - but they turn over their stock way faster than anyone else.. which means they have by far the most complete selection of weekly new releases, and there is something to be said for that. Downlow is cool. i can easily spend 1/2 a day in there.

Plantinum does have a very good DnB section though.
But Zion has a very nice selection as well plus if you request something they are more than happy to order it and call your house when it gets in. Thats good service!

I go 2 platinum all the time, last week I was there three times, (twice to get USC tickets, of course ;)). I like their selection Like someone else mentioned, their wall is a little black hole of tight tracks that get played the funk out. Still though, I have found many tight-ass tracks there. Whoever says their employees are dicks must be high or some shit. They usually say hi to me and everything, that one chick helped me find some hella cool records. Of course, I am a VERY frequent customer. It is too bad f-8 closed, even though I didn't really like the genres they had. I haven't been to Zion's gate yet, do they carry new stuff? Where is it (Cross streets would be really helpful).

I've dealt with Platinum on several different events for years now (5+). I've bought music, rented equipment, bought equipment, asked for suggestions, can't really say I've ever had a problem, in attitude or otherwise. However, I've always heard the same stuff, "...guys that work at Platinum are jerks". By now, I know the guys in there, and they know me, at least by sight abit. I'm a tomboyish lesbian and I'm sure they all know that. So, I don't think my boobs have won their favor. But, I am a sort of no nonsense kinda gal, and it never really crosses my mind when I'm in there doing business to be worried about what the guys behind the counter are doing, playing, or saying. I mind my own business. I'm not there to socialize. Frankly, if I worked there, it would make me irritated to be generalized and grouped together because someone gets their feelings hurt cause you're not holding their hand while they purchase music. That's what it breaks down to. When I shop for music or equipment I'm on a mission. I know what I want. All I exspect the employees to do is tell me the price including tax. THE WALL is as much hand holding as you're gonna get, I mean unless you're visually impaired and you need someone to read the record labels to you. It's not Nordstrom, you're not assigned a personal shopper, okay. They aren't your private musical advisors. These are just guys payin' bills, like everyone else. Compassion. Walk a mile in the other guys shoes before you start passing judgement. We've all had that moment in life where you're labelled, and you just give up defending yourself and say, "....whatever, I don't give a crap...." cause opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks. THE WALL is played out? Uh, YEAH, maybe because the majority of the guys that work there play several different venues three, four, five, even more nights out of the week and sometimes they hit two or three spots in one night. They are some of the most popular and talented DJs in Seattle, hands down. They even have their own labels to produce their own music....which many people buy. Do you think they are going to put stuff on the wall that they wouldn't play in a set? Then people who go watch these guys & run right out and buy whatever records that they liked in a set. DJs are living advertisements to sell records, they're not saints. That is why these DJs are hired at Platinum. DJs have never been remembered for their socially and politically correct behavior. I can totally see why these guys might come off as arrogant and condescending because I'm sure they basiclly might be thinking, "...dude, I don't know you and you don't know me, why would you want me to choose music for you? Nobody chooses music for me, I research and play what I want the way I want....you should do the same."

I did some digging at Platinum yesterday and the staff were really cool. I just went in, checked my bag, and started digging in the hip hop and battle sections. I had a pretty serious stack going and one of the guys noticed and told me he'd hook me up with a deal. He didn't have to do that and I thought it was cool. When I got up to the register I told him how much I was willing to drop and he helped me get as much wax as I could. Now if that's not service, I don't know what is. Nods to Platinum.

Zions gate - are good peoples. very helpful. very friendly and talkative.
they are interested what you are interested in.
Platinum - also good peoples. if you cant find something they will help you find it. or they dont have it.
as others are saying just take your time at any record store you pop into.
ask questions. who knows what hidden stuff you will come across.
since a bunch of places have closed shop, and i was just at platinum a couple of days ago, so i know they don't carry it. But does anybody know a location in the seattle area to get HHC?
this has been by far the hardest genre to find music for - for me atleast.
oh, and Sonic Index in bellingham is pretty damn sweet! i go to school up there and it's pretty much the only place to go. everyday music is a few blocks away, but they dont have anything really for dj's, unless you spin cds.
the address to Sonic Index is:

hello peepz. im new here and i thought this would be a great first post. i just wanted to echo what has been said here already. i bought my very first piece of wax at platinum in seattle in '99 and the two guys working there were both rude as hell. i was living in california at the time but have since moved to portland, and the folks at the platinum here are much nice than i remembered from seattle.
also, just my two cents on this one, but usually get some harder to find stuff from eBay or Discogs. i end up paying a bit more but if i really have to have the track, then what is a few extra bucks?

Go to Silver Platters stores in Seattle area, they have a record collection there to check out. You can find my Techno CD there as well, just look for ASNAZZY.

ZIONS GATE on Cap Hill
pros--.i found a nice VINTAGE / RARE house collection there and was really excited to see these gems in there and be able to smell them and actually see rare wax.
cons--hella pricey- for the good rare stuff...
staff- not dickish is you have the proper vinal digger respect and etiquette...
PLATINUM on Cap Hill
---went there like twice...records are hella used finger prints and shtuff (when I went there) and all the good shit was already bought up (again when i went there).
pros--decent collection of rental equip..staff was OK with help if you at the very least NOT come off with NEWB questions...prices --meh
EASY STREET lower Queen Ann--cheap bins are easy to access and dig..but they have a cRRAP listening station and crap needles.
LOTS O CDS too if you are CDDJ....those still exist?
CDDJs?
and finally CRAIG's LIST.......i found people who are in desperate times sell crate s of vinal for like pennies on the dollar......

I work at Neptune Records on 45th and Brooklyn. Come check it out sometime! There is a lot of great vinyl in the store.

Donald Glaude has sold a large chunk of his rec collection to House of Records in Tacoma. I picked up some wonderful rare early-90's techno/ambient/house recs, plus a number of rare 80's 12"s. I got some early Warp, Harthouse, Rising High (both Pete Namlook 2xlp comps mint), the first Orb lp/12"s, early chicago house and garagey house
That collection single-handedly made House of Records instantly surpass any Seattle or Portland store for high quality early 90's dance music.
