get some shure SC35C's... i know a hardcore turntablist that scratches, juggles, and does insane shit with those needles on his 1200's. he barely ever has a skip, and they are the industry standard for playback and multipurpose listening. they are $40 a piece from musician's friend, or if you really need to spend no more than $50 then get the shure M25C's because they are $25 each from the same company. you will pay for shipping on top of that, but look locally for those cartridges and see if you can get them for the same prices to avoid having to get them on the internet.

well, in that case i would head over to www.123dj.com and check out their shure m44-7 cartridges. you can get a pair of them for $99 but they do insure the shipping which ads about $20 to the price. people say to avoid them because they sell refurb mixers and other equipment as brand new, but i bought my m44-7's there and they are flawless.

the price is right, and the m44-7's are good cards. you can't beat the deal when most places sell them for $75 a piece. but i would check into them first. just because i got great needles doesn't mean they the rest of their shit is good.

what style are you going for?

personally, i recommend the Shure M44-7's as well. They're a very good needle w/ great response. Also, they don't bend your tonearms like ortofon's do. Nor do they have a connector issue as do the Ortofons.

If you do choose to buy Ortofon's, please don't like the cartridge contacts, your saliva is mildly acidic, and causes corrosion on them. Hell, don't do that for your Shure's or any cartridge for that matter.....
