View Full Version : why's it so hard to find a new venue?

I'd love to hear some legitimate reasons for why Seattle promoters are the laziest fucking promoters in the world.
Finding a venue is NOT hard. Finding a venue and making it a legit, permitted event is only marginally difficult. So why ya'all so damn lazy and dependent on others in finding venues?
Time after time, I see promoters using shotty ass, overused venues only because (unless I don't know something) they're too lazy to find a new one...

so... why?
is there really that little satisfaction in finding your own place to congregate?

Venues. . .I've only ever used two.

In my opinion, people reuse venues because they KNOW people know where it is and won't get lost in the boonies trying to find it. *Flashbacks to K-Rad*. Potentially good venues are present a-plenty, however, in a lot of cases, it takes convincing the owner of the place that an "Electronic Music Dance Party" is going to remain drug-free and legal-matter free, as well. We all know that bad things can and do happen at these events and are just as unpredictable as anything else. "Raves", if you will, are a very prevalent matter in the legal system right now and, therefore, it takes more than a bundle-o-cash (and we're talking a BUNDLE) and a "pretty please" to get a venue.

Most venues in seattle come as packages, with everything included, sound, lights, and insurance, etc, some require only a fire permit (used to be naf, i think the hall does too now). If you are in a club, you are the luckiest since its most likely everything is included, you book the talent and promote. Call it lazy, the problem however is as you pointed out finding venues doesn't seem to be that much of a problem, however the problem is the permits and insurance. First of all, no one in their mind is going to insure some run down building for a thousand kids to come in the middle of the night, its was expensive enough for a semi legit venue like naf, back in the day, i can only imagine what it is now. The kind of money that it takes makes it financially risky at best, but sure even if you jump that hoop and lets say find a venue that is up to code say like the new rain day skate park, you have to deal with bringing in the sound and lights, which is very expensive, and high rental costs. Ok maybe you can even find a place cheap, but the thing is that the economics of throwing shows right now, just don't add up anyway, let alone at a place that you run a risk of a shut down because it is a previously unused venue. They can shut you down because of noise, they can shut you down because they don't think the build is up to code, or basically what ever they want, heck they can probablly throw that rave act at you. Sure i guess you can sue them, but most promoters in this town are not corporations, and don't have the money to fight cities etc.

Anyway, to sum it all up, the risk involved is way way to high with the amount that you have invested in the party. Doing a party at a known permited venue you still run the risk of losing lots and lots of money, because of low turn out, unless you have money to burn, why risk it all.

Jesiah you must not have your eyes open! Grooveside has been consistantly finding new venues and using them the last 3 years. Here is a list of new venues and Grooveside parties thrown at them that have all been very successfull.:

PARTY ..................................... NEW VENUE

"Groove the F*ck Out" ......................... Flower Shop on 420 Yale St.

"Revival" ............................................... Dakotas building in Kent

"Jumpin" ............................................... Rain City Skatepark

"Grooveside Connection 2".................... Northgate Theatre

"Grooveside Connection 3" ................... About the Music

Grooveside also re-opened the old "Superhighway" completely remodled, currently called "The Shongo". Several of these venues became on to be regularly used by many other companies.

jesiah, you may be on to something here.

I don't think, in general it is that difficult to just find a new venue. even getting it rented and permits isn't *that hard. but expensive it can be.

to pass for permits the insepctions alone are $$, plus any renovations required to pass inspection. Then the permits are a whole nother story too.

so I don't think it's that we are really *that *lazy, just too broke to make a new venue passable. and since the venues in use today already pass, why spend the time, effort & $$$$$$ to make a new venue.

what i would personally like to see, is the venues we do have, be better cared for, cleaner and overall more comfy. I hear the renovations at fx/fever/studio B, are pretty good and the place is actually worthwhile. but most other places (even large clubs) are seady, dirty and in ill repair.

well, try looking at YOURSELF FIRST...why don't YOU book a venue & throw a party???? some of us are a little tired of losing THOUSANDS of dollars on events that more often than not turn out to be more trouble & expense than they are worth...which is why I am personally going back to throwing PRIMARILY free/donation parties. I personally just lost in excess of $3000 on the Noosphere event...so, next year, he's gonna come back & we're gonna make it a free party...anyway, just my 2 cents...I have to go back to chipping away at my party debt now.

lol... don't try to throw gospel at me Sean ;)
I've personally thrown two events. The first was at a church that was used just for that party. The second was supposed to be at the Rexville Grange, which was a new venue when I started planning my event, long before the oracle party that got it shut down.
And don't even get me started on venues that I've helped find for other people's parties...

90% of seattle promoters are still lazy ass motherfuckers. though I'm glad that there is beginning to be a shift in the venue department.
compare Seattle to a place like the midwest.. despite it being a very commercial scene, it's frowned upon heavily for promoters to take eachother's venues, and most venues are only used a couple times. read: a *new* venue literally every single weekend. ...
