I would like to inquire with all you loyal NW TEKNO members on a few different subjects.

Request your favorite dj's to play @ Level. Please post replies in the same format below.

1. What local talent would you like to see?
2. What national talent would you like to see?
3. What international talent would you like to see?

I will do my best to bring your requested artists to Level.

Thank you, Daddy

alot of my local faves play there. dave elliot, derek fisher and the perfect cyn, daum fucking bently, james capricorn, tronic, i've really enjoyed the last couple times i saw electrokid, he had some evil electrobreaks, , i heard that genesis is pretty good, taki, alert, chuckie sol, bring chloe harris down from seattle she has some sick records. you know, we only have about 3.5 billion dj's here.

national?

dj three and sean cusick. together as the second hand sattelites. or one at a time. jimmy van m, kazell, maetrik, alex whalen, tim skinner, brett johnson, iz & diz, marky star, (dude he produced a track titled "b.t.'s hair", and if you 've seen bt's hair recently, yeah.), but for real, dj three played a blinding minimal to funky house to tech house to techno to whatever set this year at the 1201 that nobody showed up for yet so many of the heads would have loved. the dfa crew would be rad, dhris fortier, did i say brett johnson?

global?

yeah it would be cool to get a digweed or a sasha in there.
but a lee burridge & craig richards as Tyrant would be insane, steve lawler, sander k, terry francis, tyler stadius, richie hawtin, dj hell, erol arkan, james zabeila, steve gerrard, danny howells, phil K, the UNKLE sounds crew is going to tour.........., Slam, Steve Bug, then Steve Bug the next night, mogwai, jay "banned from the states" tripwire (cause i gotta have more of his remix of cowbell.....), jacques le contes, laurent garnier, Andrew Weatherall, Radioactive Man, Agoria,

anybody would be cool. something outside of the staple domestic safety dj's. not that i don't enjoy some of them, but it's fun to see dj's that come north of s.f. when they are on our side of the globe.

somebody has got to bring burridge to portland though.

I dont know many DJs here so that rules out the first. Diz or Tim Harper from Chicago. Jack, Emma or Digs and Woosh from DiY, UK.

and in some cases i'll site why i think you should book them:

LOCAL
electrokid - from the the tracks to the politics, jed is a stand up individual and a kick ass DJ. not only does he rock my pet genre but he does it better than anyone else.
jade bassix - the unassuming girl with the hardest tracks! from her jungle to her punishing techno, maressa plays the hardest trax i've heard in portland, including the evil naughty filthy stuff :)
max & dorian together - some of my funnest nights out seeing locals have been these guys doin' what they do best... whether they're doing tech house or straight up jungle and/or techno. some nights i hold dearly - night @ the twelve april '02, burrito night @ that sketchy afterhours place this past winter, halloween @ the cobalt last year
freaky chakra - should really go under national due to his releases featured on some big name mix cds out there. daum a genius in our midst, a totally under realized talent by this community. and hands down the best entertaiment for any afterhours... see sean cusick show last spring.
solenoid - another that should really go under national as the accolades for david come from coast to coast. awesome electro realeases on omco, frequent sets on WFMU in NYC, a complete guilty pleasure for me!
derek fisher & taki - well, they were friday night residents @ level summer '02, and the place was never less than packed all summer, why mess with a good thing? if there are still people out there thinking derek was ever a trance dj wake up... 25 years of crate packs a lot of genres. a lifelong music junkie and engineer, he IS. and taki is portland's secret weapon, did you know he's a producer too? and today 8/22 is his birthday!
barrett paul - w/10 years experience, his heart comes through as big as the sound on his records. barry puts so much love into what he does it's unbelievable. a night he did @ ohm w/live drum accompaniment maybe was a DJ nightmare because of the monitoring situation but man, something happened to me that night.
rico - 3 yrs ago my first night out dancing in pdx was rico & barrett paul @ imix night @ 1201... soooo much fun... i was hooked!
tronic - the set nathaniel played after sandra collins @ ohm feb '02 is forever etched in my brain!
mr. mu - tony is the unrequited downtemp/midtempo master. he can out lounge ANYONE.
sappho - megan is my favorite new... everything, from her music to her attitude. hard techno meets electroclash !!!

side note:
i listed folks that i think either deserve a shot at big time slot or that have affected me but i've not had the chance to catch them in the act as much as i'd like to. people we all know & love [ben & ravi, capricorn, etc.] all have my utmost respect. in fact, anyone that's made the jump from spectator to participant, props go out to you, especially the ones that stick to their guns & do what they love, popular or not. you know who you are!!! if your heart is in the right place the rest is sure to come.

national:
TIGA already, will SOMEONE bring this guy to portland? AND I WANNA OPEN, DAMMIT :)
misstress barbara (n. america = national) [carl cox opening - haha!]
felix da housecat - what a paaahrtay that would be!! whoo!
danny tenaglia - be yourself @ vinyl said it all
metro area - 1/2 was fantastic, imagine the live act
wyatt earp - crazy sick fun!
sean cusick - i said, crazy sick fun!
ectomorph - on a bloody weekend please!
magda - let sappho open

worldwide:
ELLEN ALLIEN - i'm opening this night too!!
groove armada - some seriously funky shit
tom middleton - mind blowing @ amnesia, ibiza
miss kittin & the hacker - & make 'em play techno
james lavelle - every genre, every feeling. lovelovelove everything he does
danny howells - loved him doing prog, love him even more doing moody electro house! punk rock!
ewan pearson - whoah, the producer of the moment
radioactive man - electrocution by headphones!
mr. velcrofastener - ouch! more electrocution!

uh prolly more but i should get back to work

Hi Cynthia, et al.

I thought your list was one of the most diverse, and had a couple of quick comments...

metro area - 1/2 was fantastic, imagine the live act
[/B]
I had Metro Area play a live set here in Portland last February, actually the same night as the Sandra Collins show you mentioned earlier...it was amazing. Especially since they were playing on borrowed gear (i.e., it didn't sound exactly like the singles)- and they are practically unavailable for domestic live dates these days (unless your throwing a Diesel party, etc.)

james lavelle - every genre, every feeling. [/B]

My experience with Lavelle was less than stellar. I caught his set last time he was in NY, at the Dumbo loft in Brooklyn, and it was entirely made up of early-90s BIG breaks...the price of being so hip- that is, a little early on the rave retro.

My question to all is, is Level fun? Do enough people attend to fill the room adequately? What is the crowd like? I've only been in the space once, and wonder if it's worth checking out again...

my bad- and i'll admit, that was before i'd heard of metro area. if that was today? i'd be at metro area.

what you described really surprises me, my experience has been really different. but! these things happen.

you know i've had some really amazingly fun nights there, last year when derek & taki played fridays - the place just opened and people were interested in what was going to happen there. some SUPER crowded nights last summer. since then? the sandra collins night this summer was the one that would most closely parallel.

one last thing i'd like to add - elliott consistently brings some awesome talent, obscure to portland but groundbreaking to the rest of the world ... and he twirls a mean set ala metro area et al to boot! book elliott @ level (only if he wants to be booked there :))

Hey Alex!

That's good list, too...but you missed Seiji at the Fez last winter :) I think that Recloose played on some dude's radio show in 1999, but it was on that KPSU station that no one listens to...

heh, a little different than the prog. trance i had a year & 1/2 ago :D

recloose in 99!!! damn that must've been good. not that recloose plays only broken beats cause he definitely doesn't, but i like the sound of broken beat from that time more than now...

Here is my small list

Q-Burns Abstract Message

Every time he comes to town he does not get the proper attendence he deserves and mostly due to lack of promotion.

Mathew Herbert(LIVE)

Just fucking sick need I say more

David Harness

For years he was overlooked as a dj who could hold it down and now it seems he is getting his just due. He is just fucking good that is all there is to it.

And of course after those I would love the chance to spin Level but so does everyone else. Peace

Jason

ok, so here's my dream list of acts to see at Level:

local: hmm....seen most that I can think of...thanks for supporting local talent!

national: Sammy D and Justin Martin (SF, tech house), Metro Area (NY), Clever (NY, dnb), Lord Vishnu (Houston, dnb), Mathematics (NY, dnb)

international: LONDON ELEKTRICITY, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Vath, John B, MARCUS INTALEX, Ellen Allien, James Lavalle, Jazzanova, Michael Mayer.

it'd be cool to see any of these acts at Level, though I don't know how you are doing live acts now that there is not really a stage...hmmm...that might leave a couple of these acts off the list then. But all would gather a crowd here, I'm sure!
