What genre of music did you guys start spinning and what do you do now? I'm just curious if people get bored with a certain style and move on or how your careers have progressed.

atmospheric DnB ---> deep house ---> nu-jazz/downtempo
(over a span of 6 years)

Although, I've never forsaken one for the other!
I've just added to the repertoire.

Started with jungle, then slowed tempo to Nu-skool breaks, and finally sped up again to Jungle. its a vicious circle.

I started out mixing what "heads" called "deep house". I always thought it was booty, but - sick booty...........does that make sense??

now? I spin D&B and hiphop and - epic shit and booty house sometimes when I'm bored.

what up evil one? tell wicked i said what's up, and that i am sorry i missed your guys night down here in bend.

i started with hip hop at first. as i got comfortable with mixing it i started to move on to some dance and trance from some trendy little remix service records i have that had a few tracks. i started to buy a few more records related to it and got into it a little more when i was given some tracks from a record pool. i am starting to dabble in breaks and some other shit, but i like to try and keep to hip hop. i haven't mastered any genres yet and i am still pretty much a bedroom dj but have played out at a few clubs here and there with a wonderful response from the people in attendence. i am mainly into mainstream hip hop shit, but do have some old school and underground that i throw in to keep it broad.

i dunno, i haven't really had the chance to collaborate with dj's who are better than me in bend. most of the people here don't really spin hip hop and are into the rave scene. it is kinda hard to learn turntablism shit and have a point of reference to practice with when i am the only person that i know of that is into the whole vibe. hopefully that will change, but i gotta get my shit together and go back to school and get career oriented so i am prolly gonna have to put spinning on hold for a year at the most. it is something i wish i didn't have to do, but i know that i probably will never make a career out of mixin up tracks so i gotta do whatever i can to eat, ya know?

I had Drum'n'bass blinders on for the first 2 years I played records ... then I became less of a Jungle nazi because good, new records became fewer and farther between ... I discovered that there are loads of dope breaks coming out ... then I started buying hip-hop records and downbeats ... now, despite steady increases in income, I am perpetually broke.

Great question! I started out as a radio DJ playing chicago and NY style house - think Cajual, Relief and Strictly Rhythm. My early influences included Cajmere / Green Velvet, Kenny 'Dope' Gonzales, MAW, DJ Pierre, DJ EFX, DJ Duke, Steve Loria, etc.

Then I expanded into techno and more downtempo stuff including early Moby, Hardfloor, Bjork, Portishead, Morcheeba, etc.

College radio was awesome in that it exposed me to so many styles of electronic music.

When I moved to portland, my first few bookings were to play trance, so a lot of people just thought I was a trance dj, which kinda bothered me.

Now fast forward to 2003, and I play a mix of everything!

house, techno, breakbeats, progressive, trance, uk hard house, drum-n-bass, disco, downtempo, etc.

I am also trying to break into the circuit scene, so I am also developing a sound that blends dark tribal with some uplifitng vocal tracks.

I really enjoy my club residencies the most, because I can explore many genres of music each night.

My current influences include Josh Wink, Scott Henry, Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, and Digweed. I really appreciate DJs that are so into the music that they love playing really long sets, and over the course of those sets, they explore many different sounds, both new and old.

ZING!

I started playing: hip-hop/Jungle -> Breaks -> Nu Skool -> House -> House -> breaks -> house -> breaks -> house -> James Capricorn's mom -> house -> Charlie's mom (like a broken record) -> James' mom -> house -> breaks -> the pimp game -> house

Now I play all those bitches like a bad game of "hungry, hungry hippos"

yo metro, you can come check us out on Thursday, September 25th at the grove.

as for me, i started out with hip-hop on the mostly underground tip, and have worked into becoming an all out hip-hop/80's party starter. i am down to drop some more uptempo bassy type dj icy ish later in the night if the party desires but hip-hop is what i primarily stick with.

i started checking out this site because i noticed that there was a lot more room for feedback rather than so much hate in the hip-hop scene!

keep on peoples!

I started spinning rock, epic trance, breaks, and hardcore. all together. it was nutzy. i love jungle though so at some point i started buying jungle that fit the rest of the weird shit i was playing. no i too am perpetually broke, but have found my flow in dnb. i still buy old jazz and blues and classical and funk and rock and shit, but now it's mostly just for listening.

I started collecting vinyl, before I ever even thought of being a dj. I just picked up anything I could find and afford. After awhile, I found I had a ton of house, but now house isn't really what I want to spin. Breaks is....:D

yea, the jpt message board is a cesspool of dickless morons that don't have the balls to share who they are. a lot of shit talkers and people hiding behind computers. i notice there is a lot of hate in hip hop. ya know, i wish i knew why that was. there are a lot of people that feel no one can top them and that they are god's gift to the pdx hip hop scene. i don't talk shit about people. it is wasted breath and wasted words. plus, i am not really one for drama like that. i had my share with a few people in pdx that will remain nameless because what was said is over and i don't want to stir the fire.

people on this board are more forgiving, and there are more chill people here but there are still the dickless that hide behind computers and talk shit. you will find that anywhere, but i don't really run into it too often here.

but yea, i am mainly into mainstream because the people i were around who were dj's are all into that shit so that is what i learned to start with. i don't mind it, and it tends to get a better reaction in a club with a top 40 format but i get hella sick of the shit fast when the radio has some of the tracks playing every hour. i tend to avoid the radio and just dig around on the net for tracks that are takin off or may have an appeal. there are also a lot of mainstream cuts that don't go big or make it to the charts that are bumpin and deserve play. there is a lot of shit out there that is underlooked, and i like being one of the people that discovers it and can share it with others.

i am gonna get into using final scratch as soon as i get my schooling and shit out of the way. i have a ton of tracks that would be impossible to find on wax so it would be a blessing to be able to throw em in somewhere.

Started with DnB, STUCK with DnB.
I started buying some deep and disco house for a little while, but when I started running out of cash, I had to restrict my record buying to mainly DnB.
I'd like to start buying house again, especially tech-house, but my obsession with DnB is first and foremost on my budget.

I began with ambient. It's such a good way to really delve into the sounds and expirement with the gear etc. It's also nice to not have beat matching be an integral part.

I then moved onto Asian Massive and Arabtronica. Which spans many genre's while keeping the indian/arabic flavor. For example I spin out breaks, hip/trip hop, drum and bass, ambient and downtempo. I stay very clear away from that housey/techno shit. I got burned out on that sound long ago....

I started spinning floaty trance when I first discovered the scene about 5-6 years ago. (when I was a little candy raver) Next I discovered funky breaks and new skool breaks. After that I discovered jungle/dnb. I have picked up some hard house and funky house along the way. I don't see myself getting bored with dnb any time soon.

i started spinning disco house...i then moved to deep disco house...then back to disco house...then some deep disco...and then disco again...and then some more disco...and then some other stuff..back to disco...and now found myself in deep/jazzy dnb land..with disco touches.

i'll probably end up back at disco.

Turntablism-Everything Under the sun- Jumpup- Ragga

Turntablism got me into DJing.

I first started playing everything under the sun cause well, thats what I liked to dance too when I got into raves.

I finally figured I had to pick one genre, and hey jungle was it. Jump-up was cheap (used bins and domestics) so I went with that to try and get as much as possible.

Started dancing to jungle more, exposed to ragga through a friend. Got into it for a bit but couldn't spin it (it's very hard to spin in comparison to other genres). Eventually I came back to it, because I like how it isn't so exlcusive to "junglists" as it really has a danceable side.

synopsis:
age 8 - music listener
age 13 - sk8 punk shows. woohoo, dayglo abortions!
age 14 - classical lessons
age 16 - all ages shows: punk, industrial, techno, alternative, rave
age 19 - all ages hardXcore shows, college radio DJ
age 21 - clubs - all music, also put on basement shows, was introduced to "electronic" as opposed to "techno/rave"
age 23 - 26 emo/indie rock/post punk & loads of electronica, + rockabilly, garage bands, experimental electronica
age 26 - bought turntables. probably was first pegged as a progressive dj but i think i only spun about 6 totally progressive sets out. i can't stay in one genre for a whole set. probably why:
age 29 - i like electro the best because it incorporates straight beats and beats emphasized on the 2s & 4s (breakbeats)... it incorporates organic and synthetic sounds, it is serious and cheeky/campy, it sounds new and reminds you of stuff from the past. all at the same time.

don't forget the rock.

1999. - Stuff like Gangstarr, Shadow, Wu Tang, Beatnuts, Jurassic 5, Kool Keith
- Found out about Downtempo. ("Tosca sure is fun to scratch to.")
2000. - 80's, funk, and jazz + Underground hip hop ala Freestyle Fellowship, Anticon, Heiroglyphics
- Scratched with Syx, a metal band.
2002. - Experimentalish stuff ala Squarepusher, Funkstorung, Amon Tobin
- Joined Drumattica (electro-rock?) , and then Bachelors of Science (funk)
2003. Now, I like DnB alot

Started messing around when I was 14 on friends gear they used to haul over to my pad in Shoreline, everyone else had the parents to worry about, so my house was the naural solution...

Originally my idea was to play everything under the sun that I liked, but at that point I was into some pretty bad shit, but after a couple months had it narrowed down to hip-hop and DnB(in that order  )

Bought my own gear when I was 15, and by that time had about 100 DnB records and probably 50 hip-hop(all of which were later stolen :( ) but was really digging what was going on with Drum N Bass, and it started to become the only thing I WANTED to play. If I had the urge to play records (every 11.3 minutes or so) 90% of the time it was some jumpy Jungle I wanted to drop.

Over the years my collection has grown (and shrunk again and again, damn theives) and mainly in the Drum N Bass dept. Its something you dont even really have a choice over, sure I COULD play other genre's, but I don't LOVE them, so why cheapen it for the guys who LOVE to play it? Thats how I look at it, if you don't absolutely LOVE what you are doing, then you are in the wrong game. Leave it to the guys who wake up in the morning, and even before the AM piss have a track on the 12's bumping the soundtrack they had in their dreams(or is it just me???)

So now, all I get booked for is DnB, however, you would probably be suprised how often you hear some hip-hop comin from my chambers (although it always gets mixed into DnB by the end:D ) but hey, I def. try to not pidgeon hole myself, but I can only stay true to the shit I honestly like, ya know?

I wish I liked other stuff enough to play it, but its just not for me. :)
Peace.

It's cool to see how peole have progressed musically as dj's, it has been such an awesome journey this dj hobby/passion.

Here is how it has gone for me:

trance / progressive house
then
trance / progressive house / tribal house
then
progressive house / tribal house / psytrance / deep house
then
progressive house / psytrance / breaks
then
progressive house / psytrance / breaks / tech trance
then
progressive house / psytrance / breaks / tech trance / ambient dnb
and now
progressive house / psytrance / breaks / tech trance / ambient dnb / ambient downtempo

I have been able to play such a wide variety of events since I play a wide variety of gneres. Plus it keeps me excited jearing new tunes that make me freak out.

Only thing is is that it costs so much to buy it all!!

I started mixing when I was 15 in late '92. Most of the music played at that time was old breaky techno and some house. Around 94, I got dosed with trance and progressive, and took off in a new direction.
Then around mid '95, that trance transformed into digi-funk, aka funky trance. Most of my early breakbeat sound originated here. Artists like, Bassbin Twins, Bass Kittens, Metro, Basco, Progression, Anoesis, Simply Jeff, Liquid Method, and Icey could all be found in my stack. '96 remained the same, but I integrated a little more housey trance. By '97, I was a progressive head and was probably the peak of my dj career. In '98, my progressive made a transition into techy progressive house, and then, to techno shortly afterwards. By the middle of '98, I got my hands on some great uk hard house tunes and really started to lean towards a real blown up party pumpin sound. By '01, I was getting tired of the lack of creativity in hard house and tried incorperating some breaks, funk, and disco with it. By the end of '01, I decided to fall back into my progressive groove. A year later, November 2002, I started to finding alot of excellent breakbeat tracks and it ended up getting me a few bookings around the NW. Present day, I'm somewhat in transition again....this time to techno. I hold a special place in my heart for breaks and I don't see myself going all techno. Lately, I've been lacking supplements on my inner soul, and apparently, breaks can't penitrate that deep. Anyhow, I've made a few changes over time and all of what I've been through still exists in my fabric of sound. I love mixing records...but sometimes it just starts getting predictable and sounding the same...so that's when I find myself another genre. Peace.
