Why is it that some promoters feel the need to post that certain DJs are from parts of the country they actually are NOT from? Does this annoy you as much as it does myself? Maybe I'm just being weird (I have a tendency to do that) but saying someone is from San Francisco when they only lived there for a matter of two months and moved back to Washington, or saying they are from the UK when they only vacationed there is not right, and should not be represented that way. Where you live is where you are representing. If you don't like the state or country you live in (and don't want to represent it) then don't have promoters put anything in the "location" area of your bio...it's gettin a little ridiculous, now...

Someone can put down that they are from Greece for all I care, it's not going to impact my decision to go see them or not. What I need to know is GENRE. What will the DJ be playing!? Or at least something in the same ballpark.

understandably so...but it does throw kids off thinking they will be seeing some serious out of state/country talent, when all the while they are getting sheisted for a few extra bucks on the admission...

I just think it's pretty stupid that you post this thread and not expect to be called out for being a hipocrit. You being Deep6 AND louis cypher, and yet on the same flyer deep6 will be from eugene and louis cypher from seattle.

actually, you must be an idiot, because on the flyer, it clearly states that both names reprezent Eugene through and through...I think it's pretty pathetic that you'd attempt to flame something that you don't even have the facts straight on...get a clue

Back to the subject at hand....
Deep6,
I dunno.... personally, I feel that dj's should provide that type of information to the promoter for fliers and such. It is the promoter's responsibility to correctly print what the dj wants them to.
Conversely, a dj should state what their affiliations, and location is.
Frankly, as a marketing tool, it may work. However, it's really not the location but the quality and skill of the dj that really matters. Frankly, I don't really care where they are from. If they suck, they suck, if they rock, they rock.
The internet is the great equalizer as all dj's can obtain imports etc, when one once had to travel to those locales to buy hard to find imports, etc....

Incidentally, hipocrit is spelled hypocrite.
As one, who is attending college, one should know that. As well as, how important it is to use proper grammar, and correct spelling.
If one wants to be taken seriously, one should maintain efforts to be taken so.
Proper usage of language is one of these requirements. ;)

but when a promoter has to justify a larger ticket price by "stating" that they're bringing in Out-of-state/country talent, that isn't fair to the joe/jane-blow partykid who is gratiously paying the extra 5 bucks outta their pocket for someone that is living a block away (a slight exaggeration) from them...
...but I do see what you mean...talent is talent, and hacks are hacks...

Yeah, I relate to what you are stating. In that case, who's moral obligation is it to 'hold the promoter' responsible?
Who is to state that the larger ticket price isn't due to the 'out of state/ country' talent, but due to other factors?
I don't agree w/ promoter's doing what you are stating. It's unfair, and inappropriate. However, we are not the one's choosing how to spend other people's money. It's up to the dancer to make that decision..... Is it not?

My grammar and spelling are more than adequete to get the point accross Daniel. The use of an I over a Y is a minor detail as to my intelligence. A larger display of stupidity is whining about the location a DJ claims to be from, yet fake the funk themselves.

I see what you are saying but in some cases a dj may be representing a place he has moved to and a place he has come from.
I put L.A. on a flyer because some kids might know me from there and are just unsure if they were to think it was some Alatin in Bend. There might be two. But when I put both it should clear up any confusion. That way if they are now in Oregon they might come because they remember me in Cali. I think it might just get more complicated the longer you have been spinning. What do you think Daniel?
Just a little side thought to why a dj may be doing a little of both!
But in cases where a promoter is just making a little more money off the fact that they are bringing someone in and really they are not, well yeah that is pretty fucked up!

To get on topic... what about my homie Just Jake who moved here from boston area? He's been playing there for 6 years. In a scenario such as this he's entitled to about 6 months of boston area status or so IMO. Things like that are quite allright.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass here but do kids really care where a DJ is from? I know when I see a flyer with DJs whose names I don't know, it makes no difference to me where they are from, that does not tell me if they are good or not. I have heard really bad DJs in Portland, Seattle and even New York and LA. By contrast DJ Alladin, who posted here is from Bend, Oregon and he ROCKS. Maybe some naive kids are taken in by DJs claiming they are from here or there but I think most of the kids that go to parties are little more "street wise" than that, aren't they? Anyway, to me, it does not matter where a DJ is from as long as he can make me dance my ass off!

totally not the point I am trying to get across...ALATIN got it, though...
I don't care personally where a DJ is from (personally)...I do professionally, because it tells me one thing which is what the sound is like in his area of the woods...when I hear a Junglist from Toronto, Canada, they are going to have completely different labels than what we have here on sale in our everyday electronic music stores...besides, all I'm saying is at a professional level, it is shady..you are where you are...if you are visiting and are not a resident yet, then fine...but be proud of where you live...which is a main reason why I don't post Seattle under my name, even though I lived there for over 28 years of my life...
