i have a new pc running win XP home, Cool Edit Pro, and a pioneer CMX-3000. i want to make recordings of my mixes, but when i run a cable off my line out to the mike input on my PC, my levels are all fucked up.
i can get recordings of lots of static noise from my levels being way too high, but i am not sure how to adjust them. i turned the gains down on my mixer, but that didn't seem to adjust the recording level much.
help!

Click on the "speaker" volume icon in the lower right of the windows screen by the time. You may have to use the < to open the slider to access the icon. Double click and adjust line in level to proper setting for your use.
Peas and good luck.
Also make sure you set the advanced volume settings to record rather than play back sound each time you open cool edit pro.
Do you know how to put track markers on a mix for cds? Help....Thanks b

Check to see if your sound card has an input specified for Line In. I have noticed most mic inputs do crackle and produce bad recordings because that input was never designed to be used for recording, except for voice transmitting.
Another good thing to do before you record, is check your recording properties to make sure that the levels are set away from the max volume. If you have to use the mic input, make sure that the +20dB boost option is not turned on because that would really suck when it comes time to record.
A good way to check levels before you record in Cool Edit Pro is to start the program, create a new file for recording, and press F10. That will start the input monitor and you will be able to play a track without recording to check your levels in the software. I would reccommend not going too far into the Yellow. You can always normalize the volume of your mixes but it is almost impossible to clean up a recording that has clipped so bad it is distorted.

As far as CD track markers. you can use Nero to burn an Audio CD and add the markers before you record. Load the wav or mp3 into the CD project, and right click on the file, choosing properties. There will be a tab that says "Indexes, Limits, Splits". It will build the peaks for the track and will take some time to do that. When it is done, go through the mix and play areas to find where you want your tracks to end an begin. When you find a spot, click the cursor to put it where you want to split, and create an index with the index button. Do this for all of your tracks, and when you are done, Split all of them. It will ask you a bunch of times to verify that you want to do this, so choose yes, and you will go back to the project screen. It will show the tracks and how you split them. Be sure to change the pause on all of the tracks to 0 seconds or each track will have a gap inbetween them. When that is done, burn a test copy and play it to make sure it is right. I would use a CD-RW just so you don't waste a CD-R because until you get the hang of it, you can burn a lot of worthless CD's.
