View Full Version : Would you rather play early or late

I prefer to play earlier - I don't feel as sharp later on in the night, plus people tend to be more inebriated as the night turns to morning - sometimes you can't play druggy enough (they still don't get it)
Thoughts? Early or late?

Do you mean opening or closing, or say 11:30-1:00 in comparison to 3:00-4:30??

Stupid Question: do closing set DJs still get paid?

early. you set 'em up so the next dude can knock 'em down. you get the floor stompin' then get a warm fuzzy handing it over for the next djs to take it up a notch or seven and demolish the dance floor. i've always enjoyed playing early so that i can shake my ass to the 'headliner' myself (ohmygod, a dj who actually will dance to the next guy, not just stand off to the side of the stage and nod or leave straight after their set...). you also can catch the 'fashionably late' folks and those weenies who have to be in bed by 2am.
-does the last dj get paid?- me thinks if he was booked and budgeted for, they are as deserving as the openers.... to me, that's up to the individual dj to figure out who/howmuch/whatvenues are the kind they want to work with. there's been so much talk about money on this board... that's a can of worms that boils down to the honesty and integrity of both the dj & promoter.

I would rather open then close. If i'm getting the same amount of money i don't want to be staying up until the butt crack of dawn. That is unless the party is super wicked and I would'nt want to leave (that is very very rare) or i'm chillin with friends at another party and hit this one up at the end and close.....
11:30-1:00 in comparison to 3:00-4:30 is a little different. Their both good slots. Since I get to be picky becuase were not actually talking about a real party, I would say it depends on the drugs and the party. If it's a party were alot of people are getting high I would rather spin at 3:00am becuase that's when people are over their peak (maybe) and tippin balls. 11:30-1:00 is the more classic "best time slot" but I dunno either one is cool. ;) If someone booked me right now and asked which slot I would rather have it would be 11:30-1:00....

Playing fewer and fewer all ages / 18 + events 11:30-1 seems to be the prime time slot -
I've only witness 1 or 2 DJ's that can keep a crowd after the peak time...Donald, Dan, and Misstress Barbara - But, is it's fair to say Donald is the ultimate closer? I've seen him go on at 6am and keep the party packed!

There's a couple DJ's in portland who could get on after peak and keep it packed.
Harry's one of the most overlooked guys to do that. His tracks are choice morning cuts, and than there's chuck from alignment. He once jumped on the decks at the cool school at 5am, and played a very excellent morning set. Burnt is another kid who makes for an excellent morning set, although I seem to have lost touch with him.

My style of music is very dark and could work for the early or later sets to get the crowd warmed up or be at ease in the later.
Another thing to consider is who I am playing for and who I am playing afterwards.
If I play after someone who plays a quicker tempo then I can play either.
If every dj is playing my style then it really doesn't matter when I play.
My philosophy which was taught to me by a blies musician in Chicago"Whether it is 300 or just 3 people, play just the same"
Early. I prefer to be off the decks by 3 am either in the club or at a party

I like playing early because it allows me more time to spend with James Capricorn's mom later in the night.

Doesn't really matter to me either.. but Its hard- and I mean HARD for me to dip below 150bpm... and it usually doesn't go over to well to early.. well- it does, but if you want to get technical- its all about how you want the night to progress.. anyway... the DJ on after me usually doesn't like that I've hit 155-160 by the end of my set. I try to conform if I know what style the DJ after me is playing, but thats another topic.. All and All... Doesn't matter to me. A promoter will put me where they want.

I prefer to play early - when promoters book me late for shows that aren't going to do well it's hard to stay motivated to play for 4 people at 5 in the morning!

Well look at it like this. The 4 to 5 people that are there to hear your set.If they really dig it the four could turn into 20 next time you play and so on.
Sounds far fetched but it's some motivation.
Another advantage of playing to a small crowd you can see how talented you are by making them stay.
Lastly, think of it is some good practice time.

Good points! However, I'm some what past that. Meaning I can practice at home all I want in front of as many friends I invite over, over and over again!
I used to love playing really late just to express myself like that but something happened recently that made me rethink it all. I was asked to play really late at a club in the small room and I sat there and asked myself (for the 1st time) why should I when there's way more dj's who would love to? So I left...There wasn't that many people there and i wasn't going to get paid - call it whatever you like but the idea of all that turned me off - Don't get me wrong, I love to DJ, I love the music and the culture but playing for nobody in a really small room early in the morning i just wasn't feeling!

as long as there's at least a couple of peepz there who are into it it doesn't matter much to me. The time slot and surrounding performers will deffinately help to determine the flavor of my set for the evening, or morning. I love to play early, "11:30 - 1:00" and bang shit to a frenzy, but i also love to play late "3:00- 4:00" and keep people in a frenzy, maybe trip them out a bit, if in the right environment. I could also be happy with playing even later, rockin' some sweet, sweet, morning, happy, fun house. Shit i'll play al night if you want.

Any time before 1:30. Otherwise I will fall asleep.

If it's at a club, I'd rather play early. If it goes till afterhours, though, 12-2 is a great time to play.
If it's at a party, I'd rather play later. (1-3 ideally, but i would take 3-4:30 over 11:30-1)
But, in all honesty, I just want to play for a decent sized crowd, whenever that may be.
As Advent said, it all depends on the nature of the event. What the situation is going to be like makes a big difference. Playing to 5 people at 4am on a shitty sound system loses its luster really fast.

I would say closing is better. Why would I want to play for people that show up to an event early and dont stay late. Those aren't party kids those are the temps.
