I have been doing some research lately and found out that sometime between now and spring of 2005 they will be reinstating the draft. All I have to say is "It's been fun, I will send you a post card from Italy."

I've heard that the bill is in congress right now ... i'm sure they're waiting until after the election to slide this through ...

I'm not for what they've been doing overseas, but, if I'm drafted I will go whether or not I like it. Question is...do they like me?

Hmm, this isnt the greatest news to goto sleep on, but who didnt expect it when another bush walked into office. Well if Canada doesnt work out i can always go and get a felony :P..... On a side note, Its kind of funny how a government will put untrained kids, who are trying to experience and love life, on the front line to risk their lives for a war we should not be in, and a country that cares for money more than citizens, yet leave the over populated prisons to grow and eat up more of our tax money. I say save the ones who are doing something in life, and send the ones who are filling up the prisons. I know for sure we could all use less rapist and murders in our towns.
Just a little tidbit of my 2 cents.

P.S. Hopefully we all have finally learned why a republican, espically a Bush, does not belong in office with all the power he has now.

Putting people from prisons into war *just because we could do with less murders and rapists" would not work. How do you think putting guns in the hands of the people we have stripped of their freedom , would react to being forced to fight a war They would shoot eachother. And the Crips would shoot the Nazi's. And the Cholas would shoot the Bloods. And the Hells Angels would kill everyone.
Would be a good way to get rid of them, but would not be an effective way of fighting a war.
About the draft...
If you call me into duty, don't expect me to be on the plane to go anywhere. If war is brought to my homeland, Ill see ya on the battlefield.

um, as someone who joined the CG reserves, i can tell you NO ONE In the military wants to serve alongside someone who does NOT want to be there.
morale suffers too much, and it creates a damgerous situation when the people you work alongside with want to be everywhere but where they currently are.
i HIGHLY doubt this will fly...

Wouldn't there be so much protesting that they couldn't do it?
Such as, would we be able to vote on it? Isn't it really up to us in the end?
I don't know how this whole thing works. :)

from what i read a few months ago about this issue, the usual stuff wont be an excuse anymore. in college? doesn't matter, you'll only be allowed to put it off till the end of your current quarter. want to go to canada? according to the articles i saw, the borders would be drastically changed as far as security and ties with canada to make sure people can't do this easily, or at all.
scares the shit out of me, personally, and i'm not even male. (worrying for the bf and all)

The war protests did little, and these were very large protestes!
Even if we could vote, would you feel comfortable knowing that people who feared no consequence of being enlisted were voting to potentially enlist you?

women are drafted too? i thought it was only men?
scary.
it'll never fly...where are you doing your research? i know they have a bill that they are trying to pass (and yes it would include woman, aren't woman, and yes i am one, always fighting for equal rights so...) but that is all that i've heard

yup kim, women too this time. woudl be too controversial to just draft men. besides, women have been in the military for a LONG time...and can't swing the "we're women, and can't fight" thing...
i think its a good thing. makes the likelihood of the draft actually being reinstated far less likely.

Ive brought this up to people on a few occasions, and everytime I try to mention it I get shut down. Public opinion wont do much with the draft, do you think people ever wanted a draft during the prior drafts? They protested, the majority opposed it, yet it still happend. I think that this is a very real issue.

So it's pretty much agreed that nobody wants to participate in the possible future draft, so try and help to stop it.

Petition it and be proactive about your future and the futures of millions of other people.

i want them to reinstate the draft, mostly because im safe from it, and i have a lot of very appathetic friends. I know a lot of otherwise appathetic people would suddenly become politicized if they where made to fight in a war.

Last I heard, which was last week, the sponsors of the bill in the house to reinstate the draft could only find thirteen co-sponsors. Which means you have however many hundreds of other representitives that don't want or feel the need to have the draft to be reinstated. So chill. If it ever does, by that time, ya'll will be too old to be eligible for it.
