Born and bred in Texas, D:FUSE always dreamt of being a musician. As a teenager, D hated electronic music: "I felt like live musicianship was what real music was, a group of guys all jamming together." But after several years of playing in the live music circuit, D began to feel that the "live" music scene was becoming old, and began to believe that the real art in music wasn't just in playing it, but in creating and writing it; live instruments seemed to have a lot of limitations. "Electronic music seemed like a vast landscape to me. Limitless. When I picked up Nine Inch Nails 'Pretty Hate Machine,' I knew electronic music was what I wanted to write," D:FUSE says.
D:FUSE broke onto the Texas club scene ten years ago performing industrial music under the name Culture Industry. Influenced by bands like The Fixx, The Chameleons, U2, Ministry, and Depeche Mode, the young D:FUSE soon turned his energies to full-time DJing, spinning progressive music.
As his DJ reputation grew, D:FUSE began spinning all over the USA, Canada and Mexico. His first mix CD, 'Psychotrance 2000,' was released in September 1999, was followed up with 'Psychotrance 2001,' and then 'Progressive Mix Volume One'. When D:FUSE's skills came to the attention of Paul Oakenfold, Oakenfold was so impressed that he offered D:FUSE the opening DJ slot on two North American Perfecto tours. This gave D:FUSE the opportunity to expand his horizons and establish his name with huge audiences. According to Oakenfold:
"D:FUSE represents what I admire most. He's worked hard for what he's acheived, he's a fantastic DJ and artist, he has a creative mind and he understands the whole vibe."
A double CD mix compilation for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto Presents series, 'People,' was released in February 2002 and immediately entered the CMJ Chart at number 9.
Working with a number of notable producers, D:FUSE has managed to keep his style fresh. Under the moniker of Expansion with writer/producer Shane Howard, D:Fuse caught the attention of many world class DJs, with "Feel" featured on Dave Seaman's "Global Underground - Buenos Aires" compilation and "Perspectives" licensed to Paul van Dyk's label, Vandit. D:FUSE also records with LA-based musician/producer Ken Hankins (aka JOY), whose joint track "She Rides" was released on Oakenfold's imprint, Perfecto, entering the UK dance charts at number 14. During 2001, D:FUSE began his working relationship with renowned British musician/engineer, Mark Horwood. Their debut, a haunting remix of Deep Architecture's "The Realm (D:FUSE's AM Sunday Mix)" was rated by leading DJ Hernan Cattaneo it as "one of best tracks of 2001."
Always eager to share music with as many as he can, D:FUSE hosts two shows on XM Satellite Radio and a weekly mix on Q101's Sonic Boom in Chicago. D:FUSE is also a frequently featured artist on ThumpRadio.com and hosts a new monthly show called "The Mile High Mix" for Delta Airlines' in-flight entertainment.
D:FUSE's DJ sets include true live performance. To add a completely new angle to his shows, D:FUSE uses the Roland HPD 15 Handsonic to play percussion during his DJ sets, and he also features LA-based vocalist Jes for live PAs. The Handsonic uses virtual modeling to produce different tones that mimic percussion sounds from congas to bongos to tables to snares - "I'm a performer at heart," says D:FUSE, who played the drums for 12 years in various bands. "This allows me to interact with the crowd on a completely different level." With an on-going DJ residency at the legendary Release @ 1015 Folsom in San Francisco and a busy touring schedule nationwide, D:FUSE still finds time to bring his music overseas, headlining in the UK at God's Kitchen, Debunk, Creation, Slinky, and Passion as well as at Club Q and Cult in Switzerland.
D:FUSE's latest project, People_2: Both Sides of the Picture, a 2xCD mix for System Recordings, is the sequel to People. The double-disc set features 5 never before released tracks from the Texan prodigy. The downtempo mix on CD1: People Chilling showcases tracks from the likes of Feel and Mark Horwood, alongside three of D:FUSE's own productions. "I've never released a mix like this at all," D:FUSE comments of CD1. "It's chill music but it's not meant as a background medium; It's very intricate and musical and is really built for active listening." CD2: People Clubbing features a high-energy mix designed to encompass the club feel, opening with Scanners feat. D:FUSE "Music is About You" and closing with a D:FUSE cover of U2's New Year's Day. CD2 is "probably the hardest CD I've ever released," D says.
Tracks like D:FUSE's own "Everything With You" have allowed D to get back into writing. A lyricist all his life, D:FUSE enlisted the strong voice of Jes, as well as the engineering skills of J Scott G of Deepsky. "This song is absolutely from the heart," says D:FUSE. Representing a wide range of styles on the compilation, D:FUSE hopes People_2 will appeal not only to clubgoers, but to those who might have virgin ears to the music.
D:FUSE's philosophy is quite simple: "Music has saved my life, and all I want to do is pass on my musical message. I've been handed some wonderful opportunities and experiences in my life through music, and I consider it a great privilege to be able to give something back in return."
