ais...

multimedia student and yes, i've heard of the complaints regarding this program. i think they can be partially founded on the fault of the school, but i would attribute the majority of "lameness" to the students in the program. I'm a night student there and have taken a few day classes, and my general opinion is that most of the kids during the day want to be spoon-fed everything. This is the second "college" i've attended so I know you only get what you put into it.
I really honestly and truly strive to make every assignment i have a portfolio quality peice (sometimes 3 versions of each assignment)... by doing so i've learned a lot, accelerated my learning process so i don't rely so heavily on the instructors, and have got quite a decent portfolio rockin' from going to school there. I would say that 90% of the students there expect to have someone hold their hand through the entire process, and also think that learning software is all there is to it. Most do not try to push boundaries or try to be expressive or creative in their endeavours and either churn out trite shite that just matches the requirements for the particular assignment, or don't do them at all (stupid). That attitude baffles me. I'm paying an assload of money to go to school and don't have time to fuck around, i did that with my past schooling at WWU and have grown out of it.
Basically, AIS is good if yr driven, creative and ambitious. They don't teach you to be an artist there, they teach you skills... you do the art part. I would also say that the multimedia program gets a bad rap because many students jump into that program for $$. When the institute gives you the initial counseling, they usually give you the estimates on base pay for the average graduate, and multimedia is definitely the highest, making a lot of "undecided" students go that way. i know many kids in the program that just wanna make money and don't give a rats ass about media terrorism and art. That's gonna prolly make you a bad student and yr gonna complain.
I wouldn't suggest AIS to students that don't know exactly what they want to do (the just out of highschool syndrome) simply because you shouldn't be doling out the cash if yr not sure. I also don't recommend it to people that don't want to work hard. No one there leans on you, so if you don't push yrself, you don't learn shit and will graduate (yes there are a lot of idiot graduates) with zero skills and a huge debt.
I personally dig it there... my work reflects what i've learned and i've gotten a lot of positive feedback on it and will prolly score a cool job... but i'm working hard for it and don't expect anyone to hand it to me. If you don't want to bust yr ass, go to a community college... you won't be so sorry about the money you spent.
