View Full Version : Help needed for my new website, seattletechno.com

i'm starting a new website, and one of the things i want to have on it is the most comprehensive archive of seattle rave/club/electronic music event flyers possible.
my old flyer archive (http://pulpfiction.com/rave/groovinkim/flyers.html) was an attempt to do this, but i could never keep it up to date.
so i've decided that an easier way to do the new website is to make it a group project rather than just my project. i'm looking for people who can help me gather flyer images.
you can see the beginnings of the new gallery at:
http://flickr.com/photos/seattletechno/sets/
my goal is to organize the flyers by year. i'm particularly interested in flyers from 1990-2000, but having new flyers in there would also be good.
there are three ways you can help with this project:
1) if you already have flyer images scanned, you can upload them to my archive.. all you have to do is send them in an email to
an email address that i give you, with the year that the flyer is from in the body of the message. maybe you're a promoter and you already had a bunch of flyer scans from your website.. i want those too!
2) if you have a scanner, you could scan some of the HUGE boxes of flyers that i have.. i literally have thousands and thousands of flyers.. but i don't have a scanner. or, if you already have tons of flyers of your own, you could scan them and email them to me.
3) if you don't have a scanner or any flyer images, but you do have boxes of flyers, you could donate them to the project. i can get other people to scan them and then they'll be uploaded!

oh, forgot to add.. you of course would be credited as the person who's helping, so if you upload any flyers, you'd put your name in the body of the email as well and then you would be publicly thanked on the website :)

I do have many fliers since I've been partying since 1994-5.
I don't know about giving them up (for good!) but might be able to help out in some way.
So I went to the site, and I think the basic message on the front page is great.
The name SeattleTechno.com is great, nice and simple.
I think its awesome that you're creating a new site!

I really like the flier with the cell phone that has a turntable as the earpiece!
I can't wait to see (and post?) these fliers around town
THis is a great idea! I will certainly try to dig some shit up! My husband was urban groove/vinylized/ uncut productions back in the early to mid nineties! We also have a lot of the old "h.a.b.i.t" flyers(somewhere) You will definately be getting something from me!;) ;)

wonderful idea. I'd love to help but I think I'm a bit far away. It's probably not very effective to send large heavy boxes to arizona just so I can scan them. Best of luck...can't wait to see it when it's done.

Damn... some of those flyers from 1994 offer free condoms with your rave experience! Damn has the game changed. The rave act would take a big fat shit on your head for putting that on a flyer these days.

i would love it if more promoters gave away condoms at the door. i spent years of my time staffing dancesafe booths to give away condoms at events.

unfortunately, it isn't going to be all that awesome unless someone has a scanner.

I have tons of free time, old flyers, and old photos but no $$$ to afford a scanner or access to a scanner.
I'd help ya if I could :(
It would be wicked awesome to see folks giving away free condoms at parties again. I used to when I had a phat job and was able to afford it, and they were always a popular item. I also learned that if you're trying to get into a party with a bag full of condoms or feminine hygiene products, most cops will be too grossed out to even search you :p.

Kim -
Jimmy Hoffa and Aaron Simpson have a TON of flyers already scanned in.
I'll get them from him and forward them on to you.
Please PM me the addy you'd like them emailed to, and I'll get on it this week.
Hoffa's are from 96-2001 for the most part, and Aaron's are from then - on.
Hope this helps.
I've got a ton of flyers laying around, but no scanner. I'll see what I can do about that. Gives me another excuse to jack Hoffa's from his.
Or, if you want to come up north {I'm recovering from a nasty lil accident and can't travel very well} and drop off a scanner and the boxes of flyers - I have nothing else to do while my children are in school. :D

Okay, I just got a new scanner. So if someone can get flyers to me, I'm on it.
Kim - I also have a TON of flyers for you that I'll be emailing shortly, just have to go through and sort out the years.
Most are pre-99. I should have a good set from 2000 on coming as well.

i don't want to promote the site more.
http://www.nwtekno.org/about
it costs $2,000/yr to host nwtekno. it has no source of income other than occasional donations (mainly from promoters). that's the reason i ask promoters not to put the website on their flyers unless they donate money towards its hosting bill.
i have never really promoted nwtekno, and now would not be a good time to start.

but i see what your saying from that link you posted. it makes sence to keep the scene as underground as possible, but hard in todays world seeing as how most people have at least heard of techno, whether they know the history or not. but you can usually tell how into the scene they are by the quality of their music selection, number of years experience with graphics design/computers/music production and overall enthusiasm. welcome enthusiasm, because the reverse is a nightmare
its a shame the website isnt what you had in mind. i wish there was more i could do to help make it the way you wanted it. either way, though, i must say honestly that i really like this site.
i hope things go better for you, i have plans on buying at least 2 nwtekno hoodies soon (im investing soooo much in sound gear and computers that its bad enough scraping gas money together). ill talk to my friends about buying some too.
have you tried throwing a party or two for the FULL BENEFIT of NWTEKNO? just to make ends meet if you will ...
im sure you would have a decent turnout, of course, i have never been to a party you have thrown, and i hope to not put you on a pedistal, but im sure it would ROCK!
but you are always invited out to port angeles to come kick it with my friends and i over here, or on april 22nd in particular.
what would you like to see happen to this site in the future?

Kim..
do you still need people to scan? I see that a few people offered - but I also saw that you said you had many, many, many flyers to scan. I have a scanner, & I'm in Burien. if you need anymore help just lemme know. I'm down to help you wherever I can (especially since I'm so broke all the time & could never give any money. I'd like to be able to make up for it in some other way if at all possible).
Leah.. :)

This is a great project Kim... kudos!
If anyone is scanning printed flyers, please make sure your scanner has the ability to 'descreen' while it scans. Printed flyers have millions of tiny dots of the four color screens that are not visible to the naked eye, but they will be visible to the scanner's "eye"... and if the scanner doesn't compensate for that, the scanned result looks like crap! However, some low-end scanners don't have a descreening option.
I figured that if you are going to sit for hours and hours scanning, you might as well have something that is good looking.
