It varies from city to city... Depends upon what kind of party, how big a party, where your party is at, etc.

Here is what I would suggest. Call up city hall and say to whomever live person you get that you are going to hold a small elevtronic music concert (Don't EVER say RAVE... RAVE is a 4 letter word to city officials) and ask what types of permits you would need to have such an event be 100% legal.

OK, I'm a total newbie when it comes down to throwing parties...I would like to know what permits you need in order to throw a party and prevent it from being shut down!!

In Seattle we have the TDO. It makes it almost impossible to throw a legal party. You have to have off duty cops working as security, and a huge insurance policy. Of course, you also need a permit from the fire marshal for occupancy, safety, etc.

is timelessness, we who have wandered down from
fragrant mountains of eternal now
to frolic in such mysteries as birth
and death a day (or maybe even less)

Of course, I speak from out from under the shadow of the TDO...

I got some insight today re: permitting in portland.

To be legal, all one needs is a special events permit. Call it an electronic music concert, and fill out the paperwork, have the firemarshall inspect and rate capacity, and your set.

Wasn't too hard to obtain. http://www.hyperreal.org/~gruvnkim/ubb/smile.gif
