hey all,
i am currently in the process of designing a simple black and white image memorializing the events of last tuesday, made to be screenprinted, stenciled or ironed on to a shirt. it is tasteful, simple with the front reading 'Rest In Peace, Love, Unity and Respect - 03/24/06' and the back with the names of our 6 lost friends. originally my idea was to just make one for myself, but the thought came to me that perhaps other people would like a permanent memento as well. let me state right off the bat that this would not be a venture for profit, to myself or others. if the shirts would be made and sold, then all the money should go only to pay for printing and shirt costs, and then the rest donated to xSteele's fund and to Chickenhed.
here are a few techniques possible:
(1). stencils. the stencils could be used for peopel to spraypaint on their own shirts or record bags, or whatever they wanted. making a few stencils would be very easy, but mass producing a lot of them might be a pain. rather than mass producing them, if i went this route i would make the image available to anyone who was interested in making a stencil. they could get the image printed out on a plastic sheet (or paper for one time use) and trim the design out with an exacto knife and share the stencil with friends in their area. this way instead of having to make them all, pay money to have them printed and cut and ship them out to different places, people could do it wherever they are with a minimal cost. i feel that this would really pay tribute to the DIY lifestyle that i know our group exemplifies. plus this way you could do it with any color or media you want, so everyoen's will be unique, just like the community. drawbacks would be that not everyone has access to printing equipment, it would take more time to make each shirt and it's a little bit more work. also if it was DIY, then no money would be raised.
(2). iron on transfer sheets. someone would get the image printed out on a bunch of iron on transfer sheets, which can then be ironed on to shirts. it costs a lot less to print these out than to get them screen printed, but the color fidelity is not as good and they would probably only be able to be in black on a white or light colored tee.
a combination of 1 and 2 might be feasable as well - i can put up the black and white image and people can either make it a stencil or print it out on iron-on wax paper to do a DIY iron on transfer. again, this wouldn't cost anything at all to distribute but might cost a little bit more for each person to make their individual shirt and be more work.
(3). mass prints, either through an online source like CafePress or with someone's screenprinting equipment. this would lead to the most professional looking consistent results, but also be the most expensive and be risky financially as well. i don't personally have a screenprinting setup either so one would have to be found.
i'm leaning towards (1) or a combination of 1 and 2. thougts?
