First off, let me express my condolences on behalf of Evolution Entertainment, its allied promoters, and the people of the Atlanta rave scene/EDM subculture for what you all have been through.
Atlanta has a very tight knit scene. We're in a state of shock. We're all picturing what we would go through if something like this happened here. We want to do anything we can to help, even if we are a continent away. Our thoughts are with you in this time of grief.
Yesterday, someone posted on one of our message boards, EDMPlanet.com, about a memorial fund that has been started. Evolution Entertainment, in association with Guerrilla Underground, Evil Empire/S.I.N/DV8, Underground Syndicate, and several other leading promoters in the Atlanta area, has begun planning work on 'SOLIDARITY', a benefit party we're planning to raise funds for the memorial fund and show our support for the Seattle scene. In the last twenty four hours, we've had over a dozen DJs volunteer to be a part of this, we've had sound equipment donated, and we've had three venues offer discounts for this event to help us aid you as much as we can. We're coming together to help out, but we need some information to determine how we can most effectively use our resources.
We've got two options. We can do this next Saturday, April 8. The problem is that many people who wold like to come from neighboring states have already informed us they can't make it on such short notice. It also gives us very little time to plan and promote among those who are not as active in the local electronic music community and don't check the internet boards. The other option is that we can push this back a couple of weeks into mid or late april, thereby giving us time to plan and promote and proably raise a lot more money. Our plan is to donate 100% of the proceeds after venue cost to the memorial fund. Obviously, the more money we can raise, the better.
What we need to know: what is the memorial fund being used for? We assume it is to help defray funeral bills and things like that. If so, would it be better for us to throw together a party on short notice and get the money to you sooner, or wait a couple of weeks and be able to make a bigger donation? We'll be able to make a donation to the paypal link within 2-3 days of the party. We'd rather wait a couple of weeks and promote the hell out of this thing and get you guys more support, but if the memorial fund needs it sooner than that, then we can throw something together quicker. We've already got sound, DJs, and staff worked out and we can get a venue chosen quickly, so we can go either way. More time would mean more time to promote.
What I need:
Will the people involved with the setup and the administration of the memorial fund, or anyone who has their contact info, please contact me? Also, if any leaders of the Seattle EDM community can suggest other ways for us to help show our support, please contact me as well.

I believe a guy that goes by tygon on here is working on coordinating natl benefits to occur on the same day.
pm him here to talk to him about it. i would also post in promoter discussion threads about the same topic.

My apologies. That was a typo and it has been corrected. 100% of after-venue-cost proceeds will be donated to the memorial fund.
I will pm the person suggested, but part of it depends on when we can get venues. We have venues that are willing to work with us, but we have to work around bookings they already have scheduled.

I expect there will be alot of this going on in the near future.
I implore ALL promoters Not to use this terrible tragedy for promotional purposes.

if you are legit, Ben, Toby (DJ Steel) is handling the financial accounts and legalease..he's a lawyer so you better be for real!!

i made the sugestion that any/all promoters/crews involved NOT include their company logos on any promotional material
this is NOT about pimpin your crew/promotions
this is NOT about makin a name or anything other then doing good for the purpose of doing good.
and no one should take home ANY profit from any event related to this. cover costs and that is all, every other penny should go directly to either fund set up to help victims & families.

I know you guys don't know me from Adam. I also know there are a lot of shady promoters out there, in all cities.
If it matters to you, feel free to check my bona fides. My postname is Conscience on WWW.edmplanet.com , one of the largest rave boards in the southeast. I've ben involved there since the begnning. If you know anyone in Atlanta, ask them about Ben AKA DJ Poeticmotion AKA Conscience. I've been involved in the scene here for years.
Evolution Entertainment is a new promotion group formed from the remants of a former one, but we are working with several established promoters on this and the three people that form Evolution have all been involved in the past with other promotion groups. we wren't planning on throwing our first event until July, but we felt this is something important. Part of the reason we've reached out to every other reputable promoter in this city (we're still waiting to hear from a few, we just started organizing this yesterday) is that we don't want this to look like us promoting ourselves. We just want to help. Instead of having no promoter name on the flyer/promo materials, we want to include every major promoter in this city who agrees to participate, so people know we're legitimate.
I would give the same advice if the situation were reversed. Know wh you're working with. Howevr, no one in Atlanta doubts my sincerity in this. If I was doing this for personal gain, I'd throw the party and never bother to inform the people in Seattle. So I would definitely appreciate it if you all would at least give us the benefit of the doubt. If DJ Steel hasn't recieved a payment from us within a week after our event, then you can roll your eyes and trash talk all you want.

But that might defeat the best part of having a well known crew throw fund raising party.
if uniting souls or the stranger threw the party, it would be in everybodys best interests to have the words "uniting souls" or "the stranger" oin the flyer, to give it a sense of legitimacy that otherwise wouldnt be there. i know that i go to events thrown by reputable promoters.

nope, its about people who are doing what they do best to help out others. if a promoter made a name out of throwing quality events and had a following of people who supported them, you would be a fool to have them "promote" in anonymity.

^ ^^ while i wouldnt' really disagree with your logic and normally would follow it myself...but please follow mine for a moment, i think this instance is a little different.
if everyone in the scene knows that every crew in the city is invovled...then we all know it's gonna be legit & quality.
also therefore, the ned for "promotional material" would actually decline and we'd get the proper draw without expended unneeded resources.

Let's say I'm a random party kid. If I see a piece of paper marked 'Benefit party for seattle victims, Spring4th Center, $10' or a post reading something similar and I don't know who's throwing it, I'm not going. I don't trust some random guy to do the right thing. If I se the same paper or post with a listing of 'Guerrilla Underground, Maddhatter Radio, Evolution Entertainment, Underground Syndicate, Evil Empire/S.I.N./DV8, 180 degrees, Krome Studio, Surface to Air' (all promoters in Atlanta and people who have agreed to ally for the purposes of this event or who we have invited to participate and am awaiting a response), I'll know that it's legit and I'll go.

Do you know Matt K?
He is a known (by us anyway) trusted Atlanta promoter on my "A" list. Is he involved with this in any way?

Effendi, I actually mentioned in a different thread...
2 things. First of all, funerals are expensive. Grief counselors are expensive. You're big into politics and the state of the union, so you probably know better than most - 40% of Americans don't have health insurance. Well, so if they don't have healthcare, it stands to reason they don't have other perks/benefits such as Disability, Death/Dismemberment, or possibly even paid PTO/Vacation/Sick time.
6 families. 7 if you count the shooter's, but thats a different debate altogether. PLUS, lots of nice people who saw some crazy shit go down, survived it, and now have a tough time dealing with everyday things.
Its real real likely that a lot of people need a LOT of money, right now. Not to be some jaded economist about things, but its a fact. There's a sudden need for a lot of damn cash.
Donations are nice, but history has shown that fundraisers work better. Its nice to set a tip jar on the corner and hope people take the time to donate, but its more effective to gather a bunch of people together to dance and/or get drunk, charge them, and send the proceeds to a cause.
So yea, even though its only been a week - well, thats one week that some parent had to take off of work. If they're living paycheck to paycheck - that really hurts the surviving members of the family even more.
I know it looks more than a little fishy, but throwing a party immediately after the tragedy is one of the best things other communities can do.
*****
Secondly - and this is just as important - our culture, was wounded. The entire EDM movement, the "scene" - its been affected.
Shootings in a high school are bad enough, but come on! A HOUSE PARTY?!?! what the hell.... now its dangerous to be 25 years old and invite a 28 year old to come kick it on your porch and knock back a couple of PBRs, is that the message we should learn here?
FUCK - that.
Damn right a memorial party makes sense. I've got friends throwing one here in Portland this weekend, and I intend to dance my ass off. There's some kind of "bad vibe", some negative energy, some demons out there making people apprehensive, depressed..... just deflating the entire culture. Everything we do on the weekends that makes the work week that much less draining.
I'm gonna get right up in that demon's face, and dance my ass off. I'm going to promote and run my mouth and generate a fuckload of money. I'm going to raise my fist in the air and try my damndest to have a good time. Then I'm going to grab all that money and plop into the lap of.....
....a parent who knows fuckall about the "scene". lets face it. we pride ourselves on being underground, vague, secretive, exclusive. All parents and the greater communities we live in, in general, really know about us is that we wear big pants and sometimes suck on binkies and they heard we eat drug pills.
thats about it.
so yea. throwing fundraiser right after something like this happens, is a great idea. it shows the rest of the community what we already know - we'll live forever, just like roaches. a fundraiser/benefit party shows that, as well as showcasing that PLUR sometimes means a helluva lot more integrity and hard work than sharing a sip of your water bottle with some kid waiting in line.

you're right Effendi. there's some hustlers out there, there's some sharks. but I'd honestly suggest waiting to talk shit until after the shit goes down. in this particular case, anyway.
my 2 cents. =)

Yes. We were going to see if he was available to spin.
I don't know him well enough that he would vouch for me personally, but two of my partners in Evolution, Rebecca "Re-Re" B. and Ed "DJ K33bz" D., are friends with him. I ust talked to Ed and he's going to call Matt tonight and let him know what's going on. Feel free to get ahold of him later tonight or tomorrow and he'd be happy to vouch for us.

And I stand by what I said.
I think you are right that the families are in need, and I never suggested they not be helped.
Like Ryle, I read that original 10% and thought exploitation.
Just looking out!!
