It was then she realized her passion for djing. While living in Colorado she attended several massive parties with some of the world’s biggest headliners while also saving every penny to buy equipment. Not knowing any djs, she would stand by the booth and watch them play so that she could teach herself. She was finally able to buy her own decks and went straight to work. Kelly bought records ranging from Trance, House and DnB until she finally discovered her own sound. Over the next several years, Kelly worked non-stop to refine her skills. She also spent a lot time promoting and organizing events which allowed Kelly to maintain her humble and hardworking attitude. While working to become a great dj, she also earned her degree in Psychology. She’s headlined shows across the Midwest and dj’ed all over the U.S. Kelly has also toured internationally. She’s played countless shows for MAC makeup, led dj classes for Ladyfest and earned a runner up spot in the BPM Magazine and Rockstar Energy Drink’s “Beauty and the Beats” dj contest judged by Reid Speed, Collete and DJ Rap. She’s recently done some events for Scion and her mixes can be found on countless radio stations across the world. Kelly has worked alongside names such as Above & Beyond, Starkillers, Hybrid, Quivver, Bad Boy Bill, George Acosta, Dieselboy, Elite Force, Donald Glaude, John Kelley, Burufunk, Frankie Bones, Hipp-E, DJ Rap, Tommie Sunshine, Nigel Richards, Dara, 4 strings, Colleen Shannon, Phantom 45, Atomic Babies and Ariel Cybana. Kelly has also started producing tracks with partner Johnny Flux. Her first track “Killin’ It” is already a success being put on a compilation album with several other of the worlds biggest women producers including EDM heavyweights Mistress Barbara and Lisa PinUp. Kelly has also been selected to represent Swiss jewelry designer "Your Mood" and has her own custom "Kelly Trance" ring exclusively on their site. You can also catch her in the July 2007 issue of FHM Magazine (Portugal) as one of the "World's Sexiest DJs" and as a Brian X "Diva of the Month".
DJ Sen¢e is a versatile DJ whose record collection is a mirror to his musical tastes and interests. Being a self-taught DJ, he bought his first turntables in the mid-90's when he became more involved with the underground movement of the local Portland hip-hop scene. From there, he gradually transitioned away from the smooth beats of hip-hop into the crazy breaks and beats of electronic music. His ability to alternate between musical genres has made him a sought after performer. Finding his niche in classic gabber and West Coast dubstep, he has played for audiences all over the West Coast and Southwestern states. Listening to his musical performance is like going on a journey that touches the heart and soul. With a passion for music and a desire to see the scene prosper, you can be sure that DJ Sen¢e will be at the head of the pack.

J Renegade

Born in Dallas TX, James’s love for music began at a very young age. Originally a disciplined student of Classical Jazz, he was well-versed in the drums and trumpet. Any aspirations James had to continue playing jazz vanished once he moved to Portland, Oregon and bought his first Techno record. His "Intoxicating" signature blend of Slammin’ Electro-House, Bass Heavy Breaks and Glitchy Techno has left dance floors begging for more in his 5 year DJ career and thus has landed him bookings in every major city in the Pacific Northwest, Boise, Idaho and as far out as Dallas, Texas. James has been featured on online radio stations such as afterhoursdjs.org, local radio stations in the Northwest such as KPSU AM in Portland and Seattle’s c89.5 FM "The Vortex". Not only is James a talented DJ, but he’s also the owner of "Ground Breaking Events" a successful production company that has thrown many memorable events in Portland, Oregon such as Vibe Alive, Do you like bass?, Big Bang Theory, and Utopia just to name a few. His tremendous success resulted in the booking of Europe’s own Brainbug, who’s music was made famous in the film "Night at the Roxbury". James Renegade has opened up for and or shared the bill with industry heavyweights such as Rabbit in the moon, DJ Bam Bam, Myagi, Dave Aude, Phil York, Tech Itch, DJ Venom, Kelly Reverb, Mike Balance, Sean Tyas, Jon Pegnato, Deep Voices, Mars and many more!
Check out his myspace for a small taste of the greatness to come. Joining him is our guest DJ, Kid Amiga, a serious force in all that is good and right in our humble Seattle scene. He'll be bringing us his "sunny-blue-skies uplifting funky take on house" and we will all be better off because of it. And, of course, you can count on The Beat Council residents Lara and myself, Crispy, to keep the beat a beating and your feet, um, a feeting. :D
Celebrating the release of SUBTLE's new album EXITING ARM!

Exiting ARM BIO & TRACK QUOTES
Over the course of two LPS, four EPs and collaborations with the likes of Beck, Wolf Parade, Tunde Adebimpe of TV On the Radio, Soft Pink Truth, The Notwist, Ms. John Soda, Hood and more along the way, Subtle’s music has taken the group across the globe. Whether it finds itself in the studio or the live setting, the group’s malleability has given it the ability to nurture its strengths as musicians and develop into an unstoppable musical force. The energy a Subtle show creates is one of sheer exuberance and instills awe in its audiences. It’s no wonder its fan base grows with each tour and why they’ve amassed such a devout, grassroots following. The group has played festivals the world over, and headlined US and European tours. Subtle has shared the stage with a diverse array of artists like TV On The Radio, Minus the Bear, Why? and Black Moth Super Rainbow. This spring, Subtle will support ExitingARM with their first world tour- tour dates below. ExitingARM lies within the same canon of career defining statements I’ve been fortunate enough to work in the past few years. In terms of achievment, I would hold it up to Grizzly Bear’s Yellow House, of Montreal’s Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? and most recently Jens Lekman’s Night Falls Over Kortedala. It’s a masterpiece- a genre-hopping, post-modern pop opus. “Unlikely Rock Shock” is just a hint of the bands greatness. As for the album, I expect it to top many year end lists in 2008 - I hope I’m right! With that said, I cannot wait for you to hear it! Copies are on their way.

Unlikely Rock Shock' is just that—unlikely, rock, shocking. A straight shot—3:10 and no nonsense—from six masters of collagist surrealism...trickiness is hidden in patterns any booty can still get behind (check out the Timbaland-ready hi-hat pattern stuck underneath that no-brainer Gang Of Four beat—maybe even meeting in that same call-to-arms area as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” opener) - PAPER THIN WALLS

...You might as well tag it with the same thing you tag your Gnarls Barkley MP3s with, since Doseone eventually slips back into that familiar hallucinogenic Cee-lo wheeze of his, and with a dance groove as insistent as this behind him it's never sounded more radio-ready - PITCHFORKMEDIA

ExitingARM is wrapped in a dusky Kraut-esque gauziness. No idea what we're talking about? Take a listen to "The Crow," a chirpy bit of rap-injected dream pop and the upbeat "Unlikely Rock Shock." The latter has a Gnarls thing in its swivel – STEREOGUM

With their blend of frenetic rapping with pop sensibilities, the album opens a new chapter in the band’s career – FILTER –MAG.COM

I love Subtle to the point that I treat them like filmmakers. And I think I love them that way because the complete package of the music along with Dose’s words and artwork is so expressive, so richly framed, and like good cinema it has an inescapable immediacy to it (through the appeal to various senses and parts of the brain) that’s like surface tension on a whole ocean of depth beneath – COKE MACHINE GLOW

In Kundalini Dance we let go of form and surrender to an organic energy flow coming deep from within.

Kundalini Dance is a revolutionary new method for self-healing and personal awakening, developed and taught by Antara Decker worldwide for the past 14 years. You don’t need any dance experience or knowledge of the chakras to attend – just a willingness to let go and join in. Anyone can do this practice; everyone is born to dance. Everyone is welcome and everyone is accepted, in their present state: all shapes, all sizes, all races, all religions, and all walks of life, come and join us in the dance of transformation, the dance of awakening, the dance of healing enlightenment. Dance ecstatically and have a joyous workout for your body, mind and soul in a safe and sacred space to allow for your creative outlet to “Dance like no one’s watching”.

Each chakra governs different organs, body parts, and specific emotions. Core issues relating to survival, creativity, sexuality, personal power/control, love, relationships, communication, intuition, and spirituality are all expressed through the chakras. Combining, rhythmic breathing techniques that purify and express the energy of each chakra with dance movements, shifts stagnant energy and repressed emotions that have been trapped in the mind and in the cells of the body. It is through this dance practice that we can let go of stress, anger, grief, fear, and negativity. Our breath is a powerful tool for transformation; it’s the key to physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, taking you to natural states of ecstasy. It rejuvenates the body, bringing insight and clarity to the mind, and supports the awakening of higher consciousness.

“The Kundalini Dance work has changed my life, and still is...I am a work in progress, still shifting, raising my vibrations, and stepping more into the role, of the woman I always dreamed I could be, my full potential. I'm excited to have the opportunity to share this beautiful work with the world and I profusely thank Leyolah Antara Dekanic for creating such a profound method of self-healing. I have never been exposed to such a compelling tool of transformation."
– Yarah Volkman

What to bring:

-Water is a must have, this is thirsty work! As you will be dancing and sweating, you need to keep yourself hydrated.
-Dress in comfortable layers of clothing, so as you get hot you can strip layers off and layer back up in quiet cooling down times.
-You can bring your own yoga mat, towel, or something to lie on as we integrate the process at the end of the session.

What to expect:

-To arrive on time to begin your inward dance journey.
-To dance to a wide eclectic mix of music from around the world that correlates with your chakras and helps you to dive in– Ambient Groove, Ethnic Beats, Breaks, House, Electronica, Trance, and beyond
-Dance in a sacred space offering a non-judgmental environment where you can feel safe to express inner yourself.
-To enjoy slower music towards the end, giving you a chance to cool down and integrate the higher vibrational lift in your body.
- To build a trusting community vibe
-Dance, breathe, heal, sweat, connect
Whereas through insipid marketing international music has developed a
reputation as being edgeless, irrelevant, and hopelessly uncool,
Atlas exists to present the gritty urban music whose production and
traditions are not limited by American borders. Much of what has
passed for international electronic music in the United States is
noxious "chill" lounge music created by producers who utilize a few
producers utilizing the latest electronic tools while drawing on
hundreds of years of musical tradition and culture.

DJ ANJALI & THE INCREDIBLE KID BIOGRAPHY

DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid have played a transformative role in
the Portland, Oregon club scene for over half a decade, hosting two
of Portland's longest-running and most successful dance parties.
After making a name for themselves in their hometown's lively house
party circuit, DJ Anjali & The Incredible Kid introduced the
Portland, Oregon nightclub scene to the sounds of Bhangra and
Bollywood on New Years Eve 2000. After a series of residencies,
beginning with a six month residency at the legendary Blackbird, the
duo began hosting sold out ANDAZ dance parties, which found a
permanent home at the Fez Ballroom in the Fall of 2002. For over five
years DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid have packed the dance floor at
the Fez the last weekend of every month, selling out on a regular
basis. The focus of these parties remains hardcore Panjabi Bhangra
with the sounds of Bollywood and the emerging genres of Asian Hiphop
and R&B featured in the mix.

In order to satisfy their growing fan base, they founded the popular
monthly ATLAS (with co-host/DJ E3) at Holocene in November of 2003.
The ATLAS parties provide a forum for the duo to feature other sounds
in their repertoire including: UK Asian Garage and Drum'n'Bass,
Middle-Eastern electronica, Balkan Beats, Funk Carioca, Reggaeton and
international Hip-hop. Since introducing Portland club audiences to
the amazing sounds of the South Asian diaspora the duo have remained
in constant demand playing any number of one-off events nearly every
weekend of the year in addition to their regular parties. The duo
barnstormed New York in December of 2004 when they were flown out to
headline a sold-out party at NYC's oldest and best Bhangra party:
Basement Bhangra, where Anjali has returned to play several times. In
January of 2007 Anjali and the Kid headlined the opening night party
of the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration in Vancouver,
British Columbia. They have also supported artists as diverse as

Aged just 31, Armin Van Buuren has been named number one in the prestigious DJ Top 100 poll – voted for by over 350,000 people across the world, and an indication of his prolific output over the 10 years he’s been DJing and producing. Being the official World’s Best DJ is just one of his many achievements, but the driving force behind his success is an overriding passion for dance music.

Armin’s own productions have all made a huge impact with his last 12 singles hitting the Top 40 in Holland, and gaining worldwide acclaim. His back catalogue includes Blue Fear, Communication, Sound of Goodbye, Shivers, Rush Hour, Burned With Desire, Exhale, Love You More, This World Is Watching Me, and Yet Another Day. While the remix offers flood in, Armin only takes on tracks that he really loves. He uses exactly the same criteria for his compilations, meaning that every release from Armin or his long-running Armind label is a bone fide stormer that’s earned its place. His output includes tracks for the cult TV series 24, and the likes of Motorcycle’s When The Rush Comes.

Armin is a dedicated trance lover, but isn’t imprisoned by a single genre, saying “What makes trance work so well is that it doesn’t stick to one style, and can incorporate electro, minimal, whatever it likes.” His desire to showcase more of the great music he hears, along with the number of people sending him tracks they wanted to release, led to the obvious step of starting his own label, Armada, in 2003.

The label is a joint venture between Armin, Maykel Piron (former head of A&R for Warner Music) and David Lewis, who'd previously managed Armin. "What we wanted was a company that could offer everything for an artist: representation, a booking agency, and a record company. Artists can choose full management, or to just release a record or play out at gigs. Armada lets the artists choose what they want without telling them what to do".

Armin is now a fully-fledged artist in his own right, having made his songwriting debut on his last album, the award-winning Shivers; and artist album three is in the pipeline… The events continue to get bigger and bigger, and Armin regularly headlines the likes of Sensation White, Global Gathering, Dance Valley, ZoukOut, Mysteryland, Coachella, Beats In Brazil, Trance Energy, Fort Dance, Summer Days, Dance Valley – basically whether you’re in Australia, Russia, the Middle East, the US or Europe, you can catch Armin van Buuren at a club or festival near you!

"This is just what I really want," says Armin. "It’s not just love for music, it’s my passion. It goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it’s about a way of living. Music is essential to my life”.
ABOUT ROBYN -
"You cannot stop this. You cannot escape it and you cannot turn it off. So, I'd appreciate your kind consideration in this matter, Sir or Mam, would you please turn it the FUCK UP.
I present to you: the queen of queen bees, phoenix from the ashes risen. World record holder with a score of 2 GAZILLION in Tetris, two time recipient of the Nobel prize for Super-Foxiest female EVER, and wartime consigliore to the Costa Nostra.
She's the founder and CEO of Konichiwa Records. The most decorated professional on the streets, with a perfect track record since kindergarten when she used to whup schoolboy ass.
In this world of tension, pressure and pain, she's known for her wisdom, compassion and relentless determination in the quest to GET PAID.
- audio communiqué from Konichiwa Records Headquarters.

She is Robyn. The most killingest pop star on the planet. A pint-sized atom bomb dosed to the tits on electric and dispensing wisdom in three-minute modernist pop bulletins on the post-adolescent condition. 'Robyn' is also a collection of ultra-concise pop moments -- that rarest of things, a classic pop album. It's a sad-eyed, super-strong battery of nuclear-powered pop. It's the best weapon she's got.

Robin Miriam Carlsson was born in Stockholm in 1979. She spent the first seven years of her life touring with her director father and actress mother in their Constructivist-inspired theatre company. At the age of 13 she was discovered by Swedish pop singer Meja when singing a sad, self-written song about her parents' divorce in a school workshop and was immediately signed to BMG. A debut album of R&B-influenced pop in 1995 saw her paired with future Britney-hitwrangler Max Martin, and the global success of the sweet, soulful single 'Show Me Love' in 1997 cemented Robyn as an international pop star.
Shellshocked by the lack of artistic control offered by her label, however, Robyn migrated to Jive records for her third album, but felt disillusioned by their attempt to ship her to America to be shoehorned into the pre-fabricated Xtina template that was depressingly omnipotent in 2002.
"I think the third record I made was a big compromise," she says. "I felt like it wasn't fun anymore. Once you make the record and you give it to the record company, it's not your record anymore! And I hated that situation. "I was going backwards. I wasn't doing what I wanted to."

In 2003, Robyn returned home, defeated, to Stockholm. Upon returning, she stumbled across a new CD by a mysterious local brother-sister duo. The CD, titled 'Deep Cuts', was a passionate, hallucinatory reading of pop music carved from geometric blocks of pure texture. Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer called themselves The Knife, and with 'Deep Cuts' they had sketched a blueprint for a kind of abstract future pop. "I was amazed by it," gasps Robyn. "I thought it was the best thing I'd heard in years. I just felt like wow this is really what I've always been looking for -- and not only was it good, it was Swedish."
Energised by the potential atom-splitting that could occur if she harnessed her own piercingly honest pop to The Knife's uncompromising, peculiarly Swedish energy source, Robyn approached Karin and Olof to work on a potential single.
The result was 'Who's That Girl' -- unquestionably one of the best pop singles of the past five years. Strapping herself into the very heart of The Knife's towering, architectural synthpop -- a shifting, interlocking grid of colour and beats, hard enough to break your fists on -- Robyn emptied all of her frustration, insecurity and desperation. The lyrics, specifically, railed against her contractual purgatory, but 'Who's That Girl's loaded despair resonates powerfully with anyone -- any girl¬¬ -- left beaten by the capriciousness of gender or image politics. In the song, Robyn soars. Her anger is rocket fuel for the titanium-strong music which encases her, projects her, makes her indestructible. Although Robyn had always written songs, this stark piece of brutalist pop should be considered The First Robyn Song.
Unbelievably, her label hated it.
"They just thought it was weird," sighs Robyn. "They just didn't understand it. I guess they didn't consider it to be pop music, which I think is crazy. It's TOTALLY pop music! Modern, inventive music -- that's what pop music should be."

Exasperated to the point of resignation, Robyn looked to how her new comrades Karin and Olof self-financed and released their work. In a completely unprecedented move for a mainstream pop artist, Robyn bought herself off her label.
"So then I was free but I was not really happy to go back and sign with a major label again. It was totally illogical. Why would I do that? I felt like either I quit making music or I start my own record company."
Six months later, Robyn was CEO and founder of Konichiwa Records. In her back pocket she had 'Who's That Girl', the opening song for a new album that would be her story. She also had a new sidekick. Klas Åhlund is the main man behind Teddybears, Stockholm's amazing bricolage pop group who have variously been fronted by Annie and Neneh Cherry, Iggy Pop and Mad Cobra.
"I'd never thought we were gonna work together, cos what Teddybears do is... boy music." Robyn giggles. "I didn't think he could embrace a girl perspective."

Nevertheless, the first thing Klas brought to the Konichiwa table was the basic frame for a song depicting intense unrequited love, that Robyn would colour in with every kind of craving. 'Be Mine!' is just beautiful. Every word that Robyn sings -- 'It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain/As if a good thing ever can make up for all the pain' - sounds like it's being crumpled up and clutched to her chest.
In the middle-eight the 'song' just falls clean away, leaving a spoken word Polaroid that chews at your heart: "I saw you at the station. You had your arm around whatsername. She had on that scarf I gave you, and you got down to tie her laces. You looked happy - and that's great. I just miss you, that's all."
"I wanted to feel like I was 15 or 16 again, and big emotions were REALLY BIG. Y'know, if you were in love you were IN LOVE and if you were heartbroken you were HEARTBROKEN!
"Cos that's what people want music to be for them," explains Robyn. "I know I do when I listen to music."
The sparse production to 'Be Mine!' makes its simplicity all the more brutal. Just strings that slice in, all gasps and sighs, and a flutter of drum machine that emulates a racing pulse.
"I still wanted to write pop music," affirms Robyn. "I wanted it to be simple, I wanted it to be sparse, and I wanted it to be hard."

Robyn may now be the kickingest label CEO around, but she was out on a limb here. A lifetime's earnings had been ploughed into a dream. The conflict of liberation and anxiety about the project, as well as galvanizing Robyn, seemed to polarise her character. One half of 'Robyn' was all hip-thrusting-fuck-you-cool, but in the gentle suite of ballads that wind everything down there is a smaller, sadder Robyn.
"I'm a Gemini maybe that's what it is!" she exclaims. "Because I am this very outgoing person people think that I'm always sure what I'm gonna do, which I'm not! I always question myself! The perfect example is 'Konichiwa Bitches'. That song was made because I was so scared! I was like ARGH what am I DOING? I had to like bang my chest and go RAR! I'm the shit! I'm the best girl in the world!"
'Konichiwa Bitches' is Robyn's signature tune. Over pixellated hip-pop beats, Robyn unloads like a manga Missy Elliott. Its biggest inspiration was Bugs Bunny, and the way he'd totally front on Yosemite Sam with big-ass ACME boxing gloves.
Robyn describes it as "a concentrate of attitude. It's like a baby ninja! Like really dangerous but really small and cute! It's like a child with a huge machine gun." It kicks yr face. It's Robyn.

'Robyn', in some ways, is emblematic of a move towards a more autonomous pop industry, with artists working creatively in egalitarian partnerships rather than at the behest of a major corporation.
"I think it's the future," Robyn enthuses. "I don't think you're gonna have big record companies in five years. Even three. They have not adapted to this new world where people download music or don't buy stuff that they don't like.

"I think record companies felt like they were immortal. The industry was like WAAAGH," Robyn beats her tiny chest. "Y'know, we're The Shit. We can do whatever we want. We have all this money, and you just have to do whatever we tell you to do and you can't own it."
Really though, what 'Robyn' represents is the story of one ass-kicking little blonde woman who blasted through the industry bullshit and made a startling, profound, honest pop music all of her own.
It is music with one message.
Be your own star.
