Hey, I didn't read this entire thread..

But I wanted to tell anyone who is reading it that the other night, I went to get on 'stage' to dj and I motioned over for someone to come check the headphones I was using to see if they could get them turned up so that I could hear the next track..etc etc.. you know..

Anyway, they put them on and said "What are you talking about? They're working just fine."

Come to find out, I could barely hear anything in my right ear..Because I switched headphones so that my left ear was the one being covered and I could hear it just fine..

I now wear ear plugs to every event. Doesn't matter if I'm the one listening, or the one playing.. It was a very huge and serious reality check as far as hearing goes.

I didn't take it seriously before either.

I strongly agree. I even limit the time I spend with my favorite super deluxe noise-canceling earphones.

And I'm wearing earplugs to protect my ears and sanity from the neighbors. Seriously though, there are just somethings that either you need to hear less of, or you need not to hear at all.

It sounds crazy, but music sounds better @ most clubs with ear plugs in, since few have pro-tuned systems and sound crews to keep the blaring noise to a minimum. I remember clubs like 1015 Folsom had sound that was seemingly always perfect and clear, but I don't think many clubs, especially not in Seattle, are that fine tuned anymore.

Ive been djing for over 15 years and I have 30 PERCENT hearing loss in my right ear because of it. Its no joke! What sucks is when you start going deaf its not replaced with silence it replaced by ringing at whatever freq you damaged. I wear earplugs now whenever I go out and when I spin. Im just sayin be aware of this Im 40 and i didnt think about it when I was 20 and it did effect me.

Etymotic is a good company for musicians plugs as well. Some retailers sell through ans some selected cities will custom fit ear plugs and / or special filters for your ears. Filters are generally of 6 dB, 9 dB and 15dB, 20dB and 25dB, and you can earn as much as you need.

6dB is a doubling of volume, and then find that it is sufficient in most cases. I never realized how bad for DJ Monitor configuration that until I spent a year mixing in a controlled studio environment and then go back to DJing in clubs. We kill our ears!

I have this theory that the treble is what causes ear damage, and that bass actually massages the ear drums therapeutically, good for ear health.

I could be wrong. Full disclosure I failed a hearing test pretty bad recently an a lot of it is from going to raves. Yeah kids protect your ears. I find a square of toilet paper (unused) balled up fits into my ear pretty nicely and while not as good as professional ear plugs it does dampen the loudness significantly.

Low end frequencies can still damage your hearing, but the damage still tends to show up in the higher frequencies of your hearing. The scillia vibrating together so hard that they are damaged makes it so that your higher frequency sensitivity is lost. Much of the low end sensitivity is actually from feeling the vibrations throughout your body's nerve endings. I have never heard of music causing actual nerve damage, but I suppose anything is possible.
