Same reports here that the dust will be above average this year.

Still looking to be one hell of a year. Here is a good write-up on a good portion of the art.

2006 Burning Man Art review from Moze Sat, August 12, 2006 - 1:02 AM

Fuck's Sake. I just put up about 200 art installations on the Burning Man
website. I am always amazed at the amount of energy people expend to bring
their stuff out to the desolate space of Black Rock City each year. I can
not help but feel lucky to be part of this mad Dionysian Potlach, year and
year again, as the brightest minds attuned to the alternative age bring
their creations out to the grand Freak Playground that Burning Man creates
for them each Labor Day.

I know this will be far too long for many people to hold thier attention
span. For those of you who don't really "do" the whole "reading" thing, my
advice to you is, on the playa look for the bright blinky things and look
for the tallest fire breathing art projects and get out there when you see
something going up in flames 'cause there will be lots of people there to
mack on and be sure to take lots of pictures of yourselves standing next the
art project that fell down right before you got there and is now a big pile
of burning rubble. And did I mention, mack on the hotties? They'll probably
point you to the next rave camp that's going off.

Burning Man is fucking huge. Rock on.

For those of you who are actually going to Burning Man to check out the
art... well, enjoy the following observations I present to you, oh playa
citizens.

This is once again, a record year for numbers of art projects. If BORG2 gave
us a kick in the ass last year, well BORG2 is as gone as it gets (unless
Chicken John got enough money too bring those puppet masters from Thailand
to the Burn, but BORG2 is gone, so I don't know) and we're still getting a
kick in the ass as far as folks making shit to take out there. Seems that
once again, we are indeed a productive bunch and I couldn't help noting some
of the things that caught my eye throughout all the cutting and pasting into
each theme and grant and playa art page, and even though I know very little
about art, here are my favorites.

BIG PENIS ART ---

Usually this is all about who got the most money to make the biggest piece
and that hasn't changed, but Zachary Coffin isn't making anything this year
(he made Colossus last year: the ultimate penis with balls -er boulders-
that you would swing around on, and without a doubt that was the biggest
penis art making machine in 05) so Zach, we miss your huge PENIS. I offer to
you, my takes on the following HUGER THAN ANYTHING EVER DONE ON THE PLAYA
BEFORE PROJECTS (all of them quite possibly good and BIG PENIS WORTHY):

Burninator II - by Bill Codding which promises to look like the skyline of
Mobile Alabama with 1000' flaming towers all over BRC all sequenced and
firing at a high rate of speed if it works. Shades of Beaming Man 2000 but
with fire instead of lasers. Hopefully it will work. Hopefully we'll all
feel like we're in a Kuwaiti oil field for a moment there as we cross the
playa to the next cocktail party.

Conexus Cathedral - by The Conexus Village. This looks like a huge, open
gothic cathedral without a roof. I suspect there will be people gathering
here and by Friday saying, meet me at the Cathedral. Expect hippies and
reformed Catholics to be roaming around by Saturday. There will be Hope.
There will be Fear. I think they're going to burn the motherfucker. I hope
so.

I.T.- by Michael Christian. I.T. isn't your Tom Cruise War of the Worlds.
This is a substantial sculpture that will be an alien looking
structure, exemplifying Hope and Fear. As Christian as proved in the past,
there will be a large phallic structure that will be visible during the day.
Hopefully there will be a light source this year. He promises that BRC
citizens will be able to get "the feeling of being suspended 30 feet above
the ground without visible obstruction between you and the ground." Look for
long lines visa vis The Machine, The Chairway to Heaven, The Pirates of the
Carribean in Disneyland Anaheim, Voting Machines in any minority
neighborhood in Ohio for a federal election, etc, etc, and once up top look
for a bunch of silent stoned Burners taking pictures of the view before they
run out of beer and have to make their way back down to their bikes.

I.T. will make last year's Hypha look like a totally uninteractive penis.
Hopefully we will all mount Msr. Christian's penis this year at one time or
another.

Serpent Mother - by the Flaming Lotus Girls. The FLGs have proven that they
have the biggest COJONES on the playa year after year and this year looks
like thier most ambitious project yet. There is a serpent made of steel.
There is an egg that opens and closes. There are pyrotechics. There are hot
tough girls handling explosives and manning propane tank farms. In my humble
opinion, this will be the best built, most impressive project on the playa
this year.

Temple of Hope - by Mark Grieve and the Temple Crew. The Ex David Best
project returns again with another project this year. I only include it in
the Big Penis camp because of temple's past and because everyone looks
forward to something to do on Sunday while they're finishing up the last of
their booze and drugs. Hopefully this year we won't have another natural
disaster like Katrina to pour our pain into, kind brother, down in front.
And hopefully this temple is a little taller and not another scale
Munchkinland like in 05.

NON-FUNDED PENIS ART ----

MISSION ETERNITY - by etoyCORPORATION (Switzerland) Obviously the Swiss are
insane. They guard the Pope and rich people everywhere put their money in
their banks. Well these guys are sending M8 (infinity) PILOTS across the
ultimate boundary to investigate afterlife. As far as I can tell, they are
digital undertakers who want to catch your soul and encapsulate it into some
LED thing. They are expansive and probably ahead of their time. I look
forward to seeing what the fuck they're really up to.

The Goes Around Comes Around - by Jamie Vaida. Not so penis, asit is bold in
the carousel aspect. It is a 15' tall, 30' diameter carousel powered by a
1920's Case steam engine tractor based on the original flying horse carousel
designs. Each carousel studies the carousels that come before them. This
should be an interesting project. Anyone who raises the carousel bar is
always doing a service to our fair BRC.

2BLEVE (To Believe) - by Nathan Smith. Nate Smith is the king of understated
large bowel shaking fire art. He does this amazing stuff with fire vortexes
that harness nature in a seriously dangerous and entertaining way then just
shrugs when you're gaga over his gogo. This year he is going to burn two
round metal spheres on each side of the walkway between the Man and the
Temple. Not to be missed.

See also: Fire Vortex - by Nate Smith "Intrepid performers sculpt fire into
ephemeral wisps and twisting, towering tornados." Nate is a busy man...

At 50 feet, the Bamboo Spire by Glenn Easley screams slow and easy. There
are cathode ray tubes. There are brilliant sparkles. This is a large
nighttime piece for those who like tall things that give off light.

El Diablo - by Jack Schroll. A military jet turbine that projects colored
flames. Nuff said.

HighLight - by Nathan Korman. A 36 foot tall military surplus radio antenna
that wil serve as a beacon to all BRC citizens and a landmark from which
they can find their camps, until the project is taken down once the man has
burned on Saturday and then you're all fucked.

New Day Warwolf - by Tirzah Rodgers. This has to be a trebuchet akin to the
TV throwing beast from 98. Their description reads: "A fourteenth century
siege weapon, thought to be the atom bomb of medieval history, puts hundreds
of pounds of rubber chickens into low orbit..." If that doesn't just scream,
"Look at our PENIS," then I don't know what does.

Shady Tower - by Ron Richardson. This looks like a large, 24 foot tall by 60
foot on each side, pyramid with a bunch of sod inside it. And there's an 18
foot tower inside. Can't get more penis then that. Might be a good place to
chill out if there are lights at night but beware of the sprinklers.

You've Got Big Balls - by Tim Hockin. Nothing large about this. It sounds
like a pool table on the playa and I haven't seen that since 1999. But like
he says, "Nothing beats a night of billiards and drinks with friends."

And this one falls into the PENIS ART, COOLEST NAME FOR A PROJECT ---

Thermic Zombie Lance of Power - by Brooke Terpstra
Brooke says: Fire bores through solid granite, raising the question: What is
immutable and what is solid?

I gotta see this.

With so much big ART to see, we'll have to make time to see everything,
won't we? Here are my picks for the most WHIMSICAL as in, I SAW THAT ART AND
I STUCK WITH ME in a WHIMSICAL WAY.

WHIMSICAL ART ---

All Seeing Eye - by Gregory MacNicol. A moving, glowing pyramid sports, at
its apex, a human eye that morphs into a cat's eye, a dog's eye and dozens
of eyes of other creatures. I imagine stumbling on this thing, between that
last X over at the rave however many hours ago and the mushrooms I just took
2 minutes ago and laughing my ass off thinking, how the hell did they do
that as it passes me before I just sit down and feel like the playa is just
one big dusty couch.

Butterfly Effect - by Berlsey Farber. This is a crank activated chaos theory
machine that is way out on the playa. If you are in the shape I was at at
the All Seeing Eye above and don't have a couple liters of water on you, you
will die at this art project. But it does seem whimsical.

Chaotick - by Larry Breed. If you've ever seen this returning project, it
will mesmerize you.

NeverWas Haul - by NeverWas Crew. This is the best bet for whimsical, IMHO.
A steam powered mobile Victorian house that roams the playa and serves Irish
tea. Did I say steam engine powered? Did they say a HOUSE? This is the new
Contessa or Draaka. Or it could be.

Ephemeral Graffiti Wall - by Jonathan Mayer. A 40 foot long wall where
participants can paint with ultraviolet light. Your stuff will disappear
eventually, but that might be cool to watch too.

High Tea - by Michael Nolan. There is food that is evidently shalcked to a
table. Reminds me a little of 03's Wholly Burger, which was very cool

Pendulum of Fire - by PyroKinetics may very well fall into the BIG PENIS ART
category, but I don't know if this is the stealth Pendulum from 05 or not.
In 05 it was BIG PENIS and whimsical and so much more. Check it out just in
case.

Angel of Death - by Deborah Windham. Supposedly you will be able to look
into this high tech project and it will morph your face into what you'll
look like when you're old and stuff. I'd like to see the laptop survive past
Tuesday. If there aren't any dust storms from Sunday to Thursday, definitely
check this one out.

Bifurcation Station - by Mark Saunto. This projecct asks you to "share
memories of the germ of decision they made which affected their lives"...
blah oh my inner child, blah, I'm an Oprah watching wussbag, blah, de blah,
but I like the title of the project so I'll check it out.

Intelligent Design - by Bob Marzewski Another project that almost made BIG
PENIS STATUS, but there are monkeys and humans and a pyramid. Looks worth a
trip.

A Field of Sunflower Robots - by Stefano Corazza. There's something about a
clean energy future in this project and solar energy, but if it works it'll
be as beautiful as Lute's Lily Pond in 02. And BRC citizens, don't steal the
fucking sunflowers, you surly bitches.

Monicacos de Esperanza - by Pepe Ozan. Surreal. Pepe Ozan. Seven creatures,
from 5 to 14 feet tall convey with their presence the happiness of their
spirit. Nuff said.

Ah ART. If you're still with me then you really want to read the entire map.
Let me give you my picks for TECHNO DRIVEN.

It is hard bringing things like laptops and video - audio equiqment out to
the playa. One good duststorm can easily neutralize any kind of sensitive
technology and that is how we LOVE to rate the tech heavy art projects. If
they're still up and running after that two days of apocalyptical dust
storms, well, damn, they're post apocalyptical as all get out. Here are the
techno heavy projects that I thought were kind of cool.

TECHNO DRIVEN ----

Spectre - by Matteo. Last year the head by Matteo died right as I was going
to recite some Shakespeare or some other such crap to have my big head on
that bigger head. As I stood ready to start, all the machines died (BUT I
HEAR THAT WAS ONLY A TEMPORARY GLITCH and everything was back up and running
soon thereafter). After I waited and finished my beer, we all left. I saw
that head out behind the BMHQ for some time and I was bummed. I like this
one and I hope it works at least through Friday. Matteo rocks and his stuff
is some of the coolest art / tech out there.

Time Machine by Garreth Wilcock - So much hope, so much to fear. This Art
Deco Nebulous Entity will record the stupid shit people say inside it and
then play it back at night. Sounds very prone to microscopic bits of
alkaline dust fuxxoring the insides. I wish them the best of luck. If they
pull it off to Burn Night, I'll be impressed.

Divination Station by Rachel Fulmer - I like the name, don't really
understand the concept. It follows the voting concept we've worked so hard
in Larry's WiFi voting booths to raise and lower the man, and I hope it
works throughout the event.

Fifth Element by Mark Gandolfo and Greg Gardella - Kill your television. I
like this and doubt the playa will kill it. Industrial revolution, dangerous
industrial objects. This looks like art. Can't wait to see it.

PlayaVision 2006- Fire and Water by Patrick and Jennifer Herz. A theater, a
bicycle powered generator. Kudos.

Tree of Hope/Tree of Fear by Hibbard Engler - Their description reads, "Two
trees, one with one hundred light sabers as branches, and one with a Tesla
coil, represent the Burning Man theme and the theme of Star Wars: a long,
long time ago in a galaxy far away."

Luke... I am your father.. but can you really go wrong with a Tesla Coil?

Echo by Troy Sandal - This is odd. A 24 hour delay on DVD recording. I
suppose you talk into it and come back tomorrow. And tomorrow the DVD player
no longer works because yesterday's dust storm filled the chassis full of
playa dust and shorted the fucker out. Good luck with this one. Hope that
works out for you.

Pacific Hell Playa Phone by Brad Templeton - this project claims to allow
free phone calls from the playa. Brad did the playaphone in year's past.
Expect to wait in line. Call your grandmother if she's still alive. This is
probably playa hardened as all get out, so I don't expect it to fail. Yes
Brad, you are a rock star.

Search Engine by Frank Broughton - "Powered by Ogle, The Search Engine finds
whatever you're looking for results occur within days, hours, sometimes
minutes" I have no idea what this is, but I like Google and I work in search
so I'll check it out.

Whew. That was just CRAZY. If you're still reading, here are the memorial
projects that are entirely worth checking out. I mentioned the Temple
already. That's always a memorial project. But here are my pics for

SINCERE PROJECTS ---

Eyes Wide Open by Sheilah Flaucher
I'm glad to see this project back this year and I hope it comes back as long
as the empire is at war.

The Skulls by Camp Darfur
The Skulls is a memorial for Camp Darfur, a yearlong campaign for the dead
and displaced millions in Darfur.

What Remains.... by Chris Meyers
This installation is intended to provoke thought about life and death AND
hope and fear as they are used as motivators for war. 2,600 crosses
represent the American soldiers killed in the Iraq war so far, each with a
photo, name, age, home town and cause of death.

There's actually a bill moving through congress to keep US citizens from
using the images of soldiers who die in Iraq without the expressed
permission of theri families. That's how divided our country has become.

Gateway of Dave: A Memorial to the Kraken
by Ashley J. Merrill

This memorial art piece is dedicated to burner Dave "Kraken" Cragun
(1974-2006.) The gateway is based on traditional Japanese torii gate design,
and features the inscription: "If you're not living on the edge, you're
taking up too much space."
