SET TIMES & ARTIST INFO FOR SUNDAY JULY 31ST
Obelus: Live PA (Basskamp)
9pm to 10pm
http://www.obelus.net
Obelus, the Seattle-based live electronic duo of Adam Pessl and Jason Goessl. By playing traditional instruments of guitar and drums through a matrix of samplers, effects, and sequencers, Obelus reconstructs sounds into an eclectic mix of tempos, textures, and moods. These live electronic collages are lush ambient synth-and-bass-driven loops propelled by complex rhythmic progressions that take the listener on a sonic escape to the untempered regions of musical imagination.
Codebase: DJ Set (Force Inc)
8pm to 9pm
www.x09music.com/codebase
As Codebase, techno producer Tom Butcher made the leap from the overcrowded underground scene to the international name-brand when he signed to Force Inc in 2003, following years of independent projects and laboring. Born in Houston and classically trained on the piano from the age of eight, by the age of twelve he was already recording his first compositions. Now based in Seattle, Butcher’s career was jump-started by a chance encounter with Swayzak, who went on to release two of his tracks on their 240 Volts label...Codebase is equal parts techno, electro, house, and subversive pop sensibility. One of the strongest attributes of Butcher’s work is that it will leave you wondering where exactly to place it. Even in today’s culture of genre-bending and genre-delineation, Codebase stands out as a transition, an anomaly.
Caro: Live PA (Orac Records)
7pm to 8pm
www.orac.vu
Modest virtuoso of all things electronic in Seattle, Randy Jones (Caro) co-founded the ORAC label to foster boundary-pushing in electronic music. Randy's live audio-visual performances with Jitter, a graphical programming environment he assisted in designing and coding, have taken him to a number of international festivals. As Caro, his records and live shows combine soulful singing with uneasy processing to make dance music that brings to mind Bam Bam as much as sleeker modern tech-house. One wonders when Randy sleeps. Caro’s first full length album “The Return of Caro” was released May 2005 and has received much critical acclaim.
Jerry Abstract: DJ Set (Fixelplix, Shitkatapult Records, Decibel)
6:15pm to 7pm
www.fixelplix.com
Jerry was born, raised and educated in Detroit, MI. Detroit was the city when he began his night life activities including that of an influential disc jockey. In Detroit he's performed at Submerge, The Motor Lounge, Velvet Lounge, The Shelter, 13 Below, the 2003 Movement (DEMF) festival, Paxahau and countless other clubs and underground events. In late 1999 Jerry moved to the northwest where he now resides in Seattle where his DJing and producing has grown to the professional level. Starting off in Seattle with a residency at Groovetech, the local scene soon grew attached to his talent where he's performed at Aro.Space, I-Spy, Chop Suey, the 2001 Bumbershoot festival, the 2001 and 2002 Phoenix festivals and many other reputable events and venues. Today he is a key figure in the northwest and is one of the few to organize the very first northwest electronic music festival called Decibel in 2004.
Terso: Live PA (Decibel, Thermal Records)
5:30pm to 6:15pm
Originally from Chicago, Terso (aka Ephraim Alexander) moved to Seattle in 1998 and has held residencies locally for over 5 years. Currently signed to Thermal Recordings in Oakland, CA, Terso creates a wide variety of sonic funk. Whether it is drum ‘n’ bass, techno, or the abstract, Terso's music draws an emotive response with thick bass, sleek pads and rugged-off time beats. Expect 2005 to be a very productive year for Terso, who is currently working on a drum ‘n’ bass album for Thermal and various techno projects.
Brandy Westmore: DJ Set
4:45pm to 5:30pm
www.brandywestmore.com
Brandy is one of Seattle's hardest working DJs, spins her eclectic mix in many of Seattle's hot spots. Currently mining Elclectic House, Brandy veers into German tech, 80s rock, new wave, and techno as mood (and the room) command. Seductive to head and foot alike, her performances ineractively fuse melodic texture and rhythmic variance, with a common thread...danceability. Whether (or not) her audience is moved by the tension between accessibility and challenge, they're certifiably in motion.
Kris Moon: Live PA (Fourthcity / Decibel)
4pm to 4:45pm
www.laptopbattle.org
Two-time Seattle Laptop Battle champion, Kris Moon has earned the respect and fear of fellow battlers with his no-holds-barred approch the short-form laptop format. Don't be fooled though, as his extended live sets can come at you from any angle between dubby ambience and pounding electro beats. Aside from organizing the Laptop Battles, Kris is also the Education Coordinator for Decibel.
Misha: DJ Set (Hit Girl)
3:15pm to 4pm
www.djmisha.net
Misha is a Seattle-based DJ, live laptop performer, and producer who spins a variety of styles including electro, tech house and minimal techno. She was a resident for the Aristocrats techno night and shared a residency with Jeff Samuel (Ghostly, Pokerflat). She recently competed in Seattle’s Laptop Battle and presented a section on laptop battling in the DJGirlz video. Over the years Misha has had the opportunity to play with talented producers and DJs such as Miss Kittin, Bruno Pronsato, Sutekh and Safety Scissors.
Electrosect: Live PA (Sensory Effect)
2:30pm to 3:15pm
Electrosect is Seattle programmer Patrick Haenelt His live sets eschew the sterility of the laptop for the grime of outboard bass heavy-electro. Patrick is notorious for his focus on Hip Hop samples and 8-bit loops; giving the music a very street-level (but precise) sound. As well as having an active live schedule, Patrick keeps himself busy as the director of Sensory Effect; a local electronic music and multi-media collective. Sensory Effect has been active in booking and promoting electronic music events around the Northwest, as well as sponsoring electronic based multi-media events in Seattle and Portland.
Hakea: Live PA (Decibel / Click Pop Records)
1:45pm to 2:30pm
Hakea is Matt Carthum and Matt Turpin. These two wound up sharing a modest basement studio in Seattle where one's spatial DJ sound reverberated against the same walls as the other's synthprogramming. While they continue to push and pull each other in different directions, methods and goals conformed to the point that collaboration in the form of recording and performance as a single artist was the obvious path. Machining bits and pieces and compositing superstructures of sound, they reach for a craft to fold time and space.
Osirus Indriya: DJ Set (Oracle Gatherings)
1pm to 1:45pm
www.osirisindriya.com/
Osiris Indriya (Oracle Gatherings, IOSIS – SEA) has played at many of Seattle’s hottest clubs including the Baltic Room and Marcus' Martini Heaven, where he held residence. Osiris is currently a resident DJ in Formosa Card Room and at Contour in downtown Seattle. Inspired by the combining of music and intentional spirituality, Osiris co-founded the legendary Oracle Gatherings. Inspiration hit again when Osiris teamed up with E13, Native State Records, Area709 and Infinite Connections to bring the best of Europe’s dark and tribal progressive trance music to the Pacific Northwest and showcase the best PNW visual art in a series of events called IOSIS Art Parties. During his journeys as a DJ and live performer, Osiris has enjoyed playing at various forest, desert, beach, and indoor gatherings, club nights, and festivals up and down the west coast, as well as internationally including the Double 6 in Kuta, Bali. All this has helped inspire the release of his all original progressive and downtempo CD, "Reach Within".
