The Red Bull Music Academy is proud to present ArRange. On December 6th, Seattle's McCaw Hall opens its door at 7 pm for a very special night. Nine of the most influential producers and arrangers will showcase historic musical collaborations within a range that spans upfront musical thinking from across the last 40 years.

Producers and Arrangers include Oh No, Kirk DeGiorgio, Deodato, and Underground Resistance.

Tickets are free, but those interested in being part of the audience must reserve tickets from Ticketmaster by calling (206) 628-0888 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

ArRange is a night that brings the ideals of the Red Bull Music Academy to the music lovers of Seattle free of charge. ArRange has been devised as a special feature of the Academy, which hits Seattle between November 6 and December 9 this year. For a little bit of background: the Red Bull Music Academy first took off in 1998, when Red Bull joined forces with a gang of bona fide vinyl pushers and musicologists, to create an event where legends and upstarts alike could find education and inspiration. The Red Bull Music Academy has taken its musical mystery tour around the globe, and in 2005 plants its stakes in the "Emerald City" of America's Great Northwest - Seattle, Washington. On the 6th of November, over 100 beat heads, MCs and DJs from around the world flew into town with bleep boxes, crates, plus gigabytes of notes and notions. People who started a revolution in sound: whether back in the day or around the way. They've flown in from spots like Rotterdam, Singapore and M
oscow to participate in an event composed of - in the words of Public Enemy - food for the brain, beats for the feet. In labs equipped with turntable set-ups, drums, samplers, keyboards and the latest music production software, they'll be sharing in a non-stop music exchange which will spill out into the clubs and night spots of Seattle.

We dubbed this night ArRange to represent 'a range' of styles, as well as, of course, the art of arrangement. Arrangement was the special calling of many largely uncredited artists: the American composers who remained in the shadows. These are the guys who made today's records what they are, but also made them, back in the golden years of funk, disco and soundtrack compositions.

With charts and heads full of ideas, they flipped themes and motifs into funky orchestrations, using many of the same creative approaches used by their modern-day counterparts. Though the notes in today's dance opus may be sampled rather than played, the architects of today's musical landscape are well aware of the legacy to which they pay homage.

For ArRange, the Academy has united three of the most respected old school arrangers in the U.S.A with the modern dance and hip hop producers who followed in their footsteps. New school producers Oh No, Kirk DeGiorgio, Todd Simon and Underground Resistance have interpreted compositions by their heroes Dave Matthews, Clare Fischer and Deodato - and vice versa.

We don't need a symphony orchestra as a sign of approval. None of that Metallica S&M-nonsense here. The electronic and sample-based music that has been created in the last 30 years is just as potent. Nevertheless, one still cannot deny the power of a real orchestra. That's why the Northwest Sinfonia Orchestra has been commissioned to participate in ArRange. With the help of 36 classical musicians plus an all-star jazz/funk-rhythm section, the audience at McCaw Hall will witness unique musical scores brought to life in two whopping handfuls.

To make sure this very special musical moment is captured in all its glory, the evening's sound mix will be overseen by Bob Power, one of the most influential producers and engineers of the last twenty years.

The Red Bull Music Academy will donate five dollars for every ticket to The Vera Project, a non-profit all-ages music and arts center in Seattle. The Vera Project, established in 2000, has become a vital resource for the art and music communities connecting skilled professionals with those interested in pursuing active education experiences. For more information about Vera please visit www.theveraproject.org.

Tickets are free, but those interested in being part of the audience must reserve tickets from Ticketmaster by calling (206) 628-0888 or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com.

ABOUT THE ARRANGERS & PRODUCERS

DEODATO
Beyond the shiny disco balls, and his producer credits for Kool & The Gang's Ladies Night and Celebration, Brazilian-born Eumir Deodato has made many significant contributions to the development of modern music. His rendition of Richard Strauss' »Also sprach Zarathustra« co-incided well with Kubrick's use of the classic piece in »2001« and brought jazz-funk to the masses. He's been an in demand arranger and session musician since the 60s, and on labels like New York-based CTI Records, has worked with notable artists such as Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra. This Grammy Award winner has also composed a number of film soundtracks.

DAVID MATTHEWS

When David Matthews was born in rural Kentucky, he could have never guessed that by the time he was in his mid 20s he'd be filling in charts for James Brown, at the top of the funk icon's funky career. Matthews' amazing achievements include a role as house arranger at CTI and KUDU records in the mid 70s, writing essential compositions which have been plundered for samples by platinum-selling hip hop artists. He is also known for kicking funk in its teeth with the rarest, and perhaps one of the best, JBs-related singles, The Believer's 'Across The Track'. Matthews is credited with bringing the influence of Fela Kuti's Afrobeat into the all-American funk of the JBs.

CLARE FISCHER

His is a name that really gets the crate diggers excited. Born on October 22, 1928 in Durand, Michigan, two-time Grammy Award winner Clare Fischer is an uncommonly versatile musician. His musical ascension began with his critically acclaimed arrangements for Dizzy Gillespie's »A Portrait of Duke Ellington.« Fischer's influences range from Stravinsky to Nat »King« Cole and Latin music. He has notably written for artists such as Prince, The Jacksons, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. His symphonic work using Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn themes, »The Duke, Swee'pea and Me«, is performed by symphony orchestras around the world.

OH NO

There's clearly something going on with the Jackson family. Father Otis, Sr. is an acclaimed 70s soul-slinger; mother Senesca wrote most of his classic tunes. Oh No (Michael) is the younger brother of indie hip hop icon Madlib (Otis Jr., a.k.a. Madvillain, Quasimoto, Jaylib) and, just like his sibling, he triples as an MC-Producer-DJ. Oh No is incredibly prolific, and has produced for numerous rappers including Medaphoar, Wildchild (half of Secondary Protocol) and Murs, blending elements such as heavy drum rolls and hypnotizing synths.

KIRK DEGIORGIO presents As One

Kirk Degiorgio has been hugely influential in the development of the U.K. techno/electronica underground. With his project As One, on influential labels such as Ubiquity (San Francisco), Mo Wax (London) and Versatile (Paris), he is renowned for fusing modal jazz with hard funk breaks, techno basslines and drum n bass programming techniques. Formed in 1991, Degiorgio's label A.R.T. released early tracks from Black Dog and B12/Redcell/Stasis, and helped bring wider attention to a core of U.K. artists working in a vein inspired by (but not simply reducible to) the music's Detroit originators. Degiorgio has remixed 4 Hero, Carl Craig, Tony Allen, Azymuth and many others.

DETROIT: BEHIND THE MASK

Detroit is THE source of »techno« music as it is heard today and has influenced dozens of producers (and even more punters) since its beginning in the mid 80's. You can't see electricity, only observe and monitor its effects. So it's not surprising that much techno music trades on ideas of invisibility, of anonymity and of hidden power and control structures. Techno is a music based on experimentation: music for the future of the human race. Our honored guests from the Motor City will bring their signature sound: an opus of soaring melodic flourishes and dense, locked grooves.

TODD SIMON

They call him »The Kidd from Illsville«. A trumpet player, arranger and music teacher by trade, this 28-year old is the one to call if you're thinking of translating your musical brainwave into tomorrow's modern music. Todd Simon's ears are open and he dips into classical, jazz, house, soul or hip hop. His work can be heard during your favorite TV-programs - but his skills go beyond the screen. Without his help, seminal deep house tunes like DJ Spinna's Mix of Shaun Escofferey's »Days Like This« wouldn't have the same power to transform dance-floors worldwide. On top of that, without him Quantic Soul Orchestra, the Eels or Macy Gray just wouldn't sound the same. Todd recently enabled Yesterday's New Quintet (by - guess who - Madlib strikes again) and the project »Sound Directions« to be showcased for an eager Los Angeles audience, as you may well have heard through the grapevine by now.

BOB POWER

The mixing desk will be manned by BOB POWER. Even if you're not familiar with his name, you will know producer/engineer Bob Power's work if you have bought a good hip hop record during the last 15 years. From true school classics like A Tribe Called Quest 'Midnight Marauders' or 'The Low End Theory', through to defining the seminal sound of The Roots and 4 of their ground breaking albums, or even helping out on dance-floor party jams like Dee-Lite's 'Groove is in the Heart', his contribution to the history of urban beats is vast.
